Alabama vs. Kentucky

Researching full tuition/ride and am not finding a big difference in these two schools, though I am sure there are. I see the scholarship difference but what about the schools in general? D will be a history major. Thank you!

I don’t understand what you are saying. I know Alabama offers the automatic full tuition scholarships,

http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html

32-36 ACT and 3.5 GPA will get you full tuition at Alabama ($23,950/year)

At Kentucky,

http://www.uky.edu/financialaid/content/non-resident-scholarships

30+ ACT and 3.5 GPA gets you $10,000/year.

The Kentucky will cover about half the yearly tuition. It’s 10k/SEMESTER (unless I’m reading this wrong, I don’t know what upper division / lower division tuition rates are), so without any other financial aid you’d still be paying 10k per year and room and board.

At UA you would only be paying for the room and board.

@ctesiphon Kentucky offers full rides to NMF–sorry I should have been more clear in my original post. Alabama offers full ride for the first year and full tuition for four more years. I called Kentucky to confirm that this is automatic as long as the student lists UK as their first choice. My question was just a general question about the differences in the schools.

bama has a large OOS population…and the students arent just coming from the region. Bama has students from all 50 states. For instance, Calif is #5 in sending kids to Bama.

I suggest you visit the schools. Bama is gorgeous.

Bama offers more than just tuition after that first year. For years two thru four, the student gets an addl 3500 per year. Plus the other goodies, like study abroad money and an iPad.

One nice thing about that 5th year of tuition which can be used for grad school, is that it can also be used for a semester abroad. Bama gives the OOS student the semester of tuition (about $12k) and thats usually more than enough to pay for a semester abroad tuition, room and board…and sometimes airfare and spending money too.

I am a NMF and have toured both schools and can give a little bit of a comparison:

Both Tuscaloosa and Lexington are very nice, though Lexington is a bit bigger.

Both schools have great school spirit, but do you want big basketball or big football?

Alabama has a higher national reputation, but both have a ton of money

It is important to note that Kentucky does not guarantee admission to the honors college for NMF

Both campuses are nice, but Alabama’s is a bit more compact (despite the larger student body)

The weather is 15-20 degrees warmer in the winter in Alabama

Greek life has more of a presence at Alabama, but it is not the be-all-end-all at either school.

The dorms are really nice at both schools

The NMF scholarships are pretty much identical, so you should look at other factors to decide

Alabama draws a more national student body, but still maintains its Southern roots. But, at the same time, Kentucky really is the University OF Kentucky if you know what I mean.

Cincinnati is reasonably close to Lexington, as is Birmingham to Tuscaloosa

Also look at the programs available for your major and interests

Both cities have a college town area and a separate downtown

Are you just down to these two (I am still considering seven or eight)?
