Im a graduating high school senior trying to decide where to go. At Alabama I would have a full ride and be in the honors college/Blount liberal arts program. At Sewanee I would have a partial scholarship. Sewanee is ranked higher, and money is not a problem. What should I do?

Those two places are night and day. Do you want a big state U with great athletics and tons of parties etc? Or- do you want to be on the top of a mountain with smart, wealthy kids where you will go to dinner at your professors' houses? VERY different environments. Honors at a state U is fairly prestigious and I heard 'Bama is beefing up their program. Sewanee is a LAC- great education but not as highly recognized as Swat, Williams etc. Where do you feel most comfortable?

Well, there are definitely tons of parties at Sewanee, to, all of which seemed to be audible from my bedroom window at midnight last night.

Your comfort level at each is very important. If you thrive in natural beauty Sewanee cannot be beaten-- by anything. What might you want to study? If you want something out-of-the-way, Alabama is maybe more likely to offer it, just because of the size, but Sewanee is very strong in a number of areas.

Im not exactly sure what I want to study, but I love history and english. I was also wondering how the work load would compare. I am willing to work but I also enjoy free time. How much more would I have at Alabama than at Sewanee?

wcasey,

Sewanee is particularly noted for English and History. You will work as hard as you like either place, I suspect. It is easy to find out from other students at Sewanee about the expectations of profs, and you may find that you WANT to take the more demanding teachers. They are some of the best ones, certainly in English. But you will not have to study all the time at Sewanee. There is plenty of time for relaxation, especially good for the love of the out of doors.

If you decide to go to Sewanee, feel free to PM me. I've been taking English there for 3 semesters, and would be happy to tell you what I can about the department, the classes, the students, and the professors.
