Alabama's NMF & NA scholarship is still available....

Value of tuition for up to five years or 10 semesters for degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate studies

One year of on-campus housing at regular room rate* (based on assignment by Housing and Residential Communities)

A $3,500 per year Merit/Achievement Scholarship stipend for four years. A student must maintain at least a 3.3 GPA to continue receiving this scholarship stipend. If a corporate-sponsored scholarship from the National Merit Corporation is received, the total value cannot exceed $3,500. (For example, if you receive a corporate-sponsored scholarship of $2,000 per year, UA will contribute $1,500 per year to reach the total stipend amount of $3,500.)

One-time allowance of $2,000 for use in summer research or international study (after completing one year of study at UA)

iPad

Since the award has been increased to 5 years of tuition, that means that a student can do a summer abroad program, cash in their "semester tuition amount" (roughly $12,500) and use that for abroad tuition, airfare, housing and other travel costs. that's a lot for a summer abroad.

Also....If you major in Engineering or Comp Sci, you're given an additional $2500 per year....so that's $6k total in addition to the 5 years of tuition, 1 year of housing, and the rest.

The IPad will be the latest version.

The housing scholarship can be used for the honors dorm. An adjustment is made to cover those super-suites.

I wonder how that stacks up with what Kentucky and Cincinnati offer? My son will be a NMF and is using those two schools for safeties. He was a QB College Match candidate, but did not get matched. I think ND is his top choice, and he would take a long look at Yale and MIT if he were admitted. Those schools will meet demonstrated need, and I think whatever costs are left over are worth paying for if reasonable. He is also interested in Michigan State and they will offer a sizeable package that equalizes tuition, covers room and board, etc.

I think distance is going to be a factor for him, so I haven’t pushed Oklahoma, Alabama, or UCF.

How much is room and board at Alabama. I know I can look it up myself, but you seem pretty tuned in to what UA has to offer.

When we were looking at NMF schools last year, the deals at the big unis were so close that decisions came down to other differences, like the quality of programs, extracurriculars, and housing. Honors housing at Kentucky is worth taking a look at. @greeninohio

We looked at some Ivy Schools and MIT and Cal tech but their idea of demonstrated need and mine were way different. Decided to take a full ride at Baylor.

My wife and son visited UK for their Kentucky Scholars program and were impressed with what they saw. 4.5 hours is probably at the limit of how far away he wants to be, though.

Room and board varies depending on what dorm you select. However, the first year of housing is covered with the NMF award, and that including the honors housing. After the first year, most kids want to move off campus to one of the many very nice student apts that are nearby. So, NMF/NA students use the stipend towards some of those options.

A meal plan is only required the first year. The frosh plan is not cheap, but I don’t remember what it is. For following years, students either choose a less expensive plan or no plan (since it’s not required past frosh year).

Wanted to note that the deadline for the NMF scholarship has NOT passed at Alabama. Bama accepts NMF apps until Apr 30th. The Dec 15th deadline doesn’t apply to NMFs (or NAs.)

The award for NMFs and NAs is…

5 years of tuition ~ fifth year can be used for grad school
^^(a semester can be used to pay for a summer abroad…$12,500 towards that)
1 year of housing - including honors housing
2000 summer abroad money
$3500 stipend for 4 years
iPad (whatever the latest one is)

And…if you’re an Eng’g or CS major, you get an additional $2500 per year.

@mom2collegekids thanks for posting the reminder.

Does one have to let Alabama know of NMF status to get a written NMF scholarship offer? Right now we have a written scholarship offer based on ACT/GPA scores.
Or will the written offer be made only once Alabama is listed as a first choice school?

I am also trying to find the GPA requirements to maintain the Alabama scholarships. Some other colleges have very high GPA requirements which will be hard to maintain in engineering.

Do you know the COA for each year after the scholarship(s)? OU has given us the estimated cost for each year. But I still have to research Alabama.

Thanks for all of your posts and help. We would never have known about the fantastic Alabama scholarships if I had not read your posts.

To keep the scholarship, a 3.0 is needed…by the end of the year…not by semester.

And if the student still has “an issue” at the end of the year, then Bama lets them “try again” the next fall. Bama makes it very easy to keep the award.

Hmmmm…I can’t remember. I know that you have to send Bama a copy of the NMF cert. I think (not sure) at that point, the school sends the big offer, and the paperwork says that you must name Bama #1 by May 1st.

but not totally sure on that point. lol

Well…that’s a good question. lol.

Are you an eng’g or Comp Sci major? If so, then you get an add’ 2500 per year.

Bama pads its COA…the pricey super suites are in the COA. Regular “standard doubles” are about $4k cheaper, so really the COA is $4k cheaper right there…so if you’re comparing another school’s COA and their COA includes standard doubles dorms, then take that into consideration.

The FIRST year is always the most expensive because of the mandatory frosh meal plan (thankfully, not needed after frosh year!) After frosh year, you don’t even have to have any meal plan…but many choose a small one just to make eating on campus easier.

The NMF scholarship includes housing for the first year…and that can include the pricey honors super suites.

The $3500 per year

So…The first year, your remaining costs will very low since that $3500 will cover meal plan and fees.

so the remaining costs would be books, travel, and personal expenses. Obviously those costs will vary depending how thrifty the kid is, whether you buy books online, or if you have to travel from very far away.

The remaining years will vary based on housing and meal choice. And the 3500 would go towards that.

If you also have that 2500 per year from eng’g/CS, then your remaining costs would be really low.

@mom2collegekids thanks so much for your response.

I think Alabama works out cheaper than OU at the documented scholarship levels. (not counting any departmental and other scholarships).

My son is planning on engineering and it looks like the first year will be almost a free ride. The next 3 years around 2000+ (with the lower cost dorms). An incredible scholarship.

Guess we have to visit and tour the Chemical Engineering department.

^^^
Yes, you do !!!

My son was ChemE at Bama!

With the Eng’g money, the first year should be completely free.

Be sure to ask to tour the 3D printing lab, too!

Our regional UA rep emailed my D yesterday and asked for a scanned copy of her certificate so her scholarship offer could be bumped up to the NMF one. UA is on top of things!

Exactly what 4blessings said. Our regional recruiter said to send a copy of NMF via email and shed’d send to the “scholarship department”. I didn’t even know there was such a department! And we were promised letter with upped scholarship offer. Decision has to be made by 1 May.

or send the copy to scholarships@ua.edu

I wonder if Alabama will keep offering the NMF scholarship next year?
Anyone know?

It’s almost 100% certain UA will offer the NMF scholarship (along with the other scholarships) next year. They’ve been doing it for many years. The amount offered may be different, but the scholarship will no doubt be there next year.
