Alaska? What?

Does anyone actually live in Alaska and go on CC? I know this has to be the most pointless thread on this entire website.

However I wonder if anyone that actually lives in AK would be paranoid enough to come to CC to seek for help. I for one do live in AK and I do not know ANYONE that is motivated enough to get into a good school. Don't get my wrong my school is one of the top ranked school in the state and maybe in the nation (according to our school officials, but they like to lie about stuff.)

I am moving to a bigger town in AK next year and I hope I get to meet people that are actually caring about their future. I am just rather sad that there is absolutely no one that I know from my current school this year that's looking forward to an academic future.

Not saying that I don't know how to enjoy my life, I am very active socially in my school. But here just want you to know this: our only volunteering organization (key club) has about 10 members, 6 are freshmen and most upper classmen quits after a year. Our book club (one the only) has 8 members? 2-3 show up all the time for discussion (that actually read the books)

So far as I know only me and a couple other kids that studies for the SAT. My really smart friend and I are the only ones that take college classes (other than some literature geeks that take Eng classes).

I might sound like the biggest punk ever but here's what our school is really into. I guess it's the winter cold that gets you. -30 for 4 month really make people rather inactive mentally.

So I definitely would consider that I am one of the bright people in AK (conceited? maybe. But definitely supportable by facts.) So I really hope some motivated individuals move to AK and tinker with the bell curve a little bit.

This made me laugh a bit. Does that make you a <insert college="" class="" department="" here=""> geek?</insert>

Colleges like diversity, so the fact that you live in Alaska actually helps your chances to get in some colleges in the continental United States.

Come to Florida for school and see how much better it is.

There's one girl who's going to Michigan State next year, but lives in Alaska right now, that lurks around here. I can't remember her name for the life of me.

I lived in Alaska if that counts. I no longer do though. I moved down the lower 48 in fourth grade.

Hmmm...
I always thought the schools in Alaska where more impressive than what I go to here in Idaho. You never know though I guess.

Is it me or is Alaska more redneck than the South?

Every road sign in Alaska has been shot at. Since I am a gun nut, I could usually identify what type of bullets were sent at the signs. Apparently .22s, .30 caliber rifles, and shotgun slugs are very popular in Alaska (as they are in every state in the south).

Liist- They are very popular here in Idaho also!

I personally wouldn't call it redneck. Then again I haven't lived there for 5 years. It's just a hunting area because of all of the wildlife. Although, I will admit to their being some towns that yes, are more redneck than the South.

Not an Alaskan, but I've visited there. It's not simply Alaska though.

@ tubachick

If you are any expert in guns, we all know that those are the most common cartridges wherever hunting is common. Otherwise you're more likely to see 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45ACP (3 most common handgun rounds).

I like guns and I like hunting, but oddly I'm not a redneck.

School is like that here in Hawaii. Nobody really cares. The only other Hawaii kids I see on CC are ones from the top two privates in the state.

I live in Alaska. I live in "the big city" and have very academically motivated children and they have many friends who are also academicaly oriented. They do exist, maybe not out in the village but they are here. The State operates a Boarding School that is academicaaly challenging. All residents are eligible to apply and if they are accepted it is free. Moving to a larger city may help. Check out the College Boards stats on Alaska.

There are lots of hard working kids here!

@romanigypsyeyes two of my friends actually are going to Michigan state. One's there for a year and one is starting out next year. To them they felt that they have made the right choices

@bulinskimom hey I am moving to the "big city". what "big city" school do you go to?

btw bulinskimom I just browsed through that PDF file. Very intersting! What page is that filed prompted on? I want to check out other states' and the national averages too.

Just erase AK from the url and put in the acronym for the state you want to look at.

Alaska! I miss it.

my brother and dad used to live in barrow. yeah, hawaii's pretty much like that too.

I live in Anchorage and I'd have to say that there are a ton of really motivated students here. In all fairness though, Anchorage is not very representative of the rest of Alaska.

I lived in Fairbanks for elementary school. The programs were good. Looking back I can't say anything about the students because it was elementary school. Who really and trully cares then? There was a lot more offered there than at the school I transfered to when we moved to Idaho, or any school I've seen in Idaho.

Ah, well, I've visited Anchorage and it's one hell of a place. ;)

I'm the girl romanigypsyeyes is referring to :) I'm from Anchorage, Alaska (lived here all my life but will be getting out-of-state for college in a few weeks!). I hang with a pretty smart bunch of folks (granted, only 1 other person I know has lurked around on CC). I admit I was disappointed that in my school only a group of about 50-100 kids out of a school of ~2000 were active in multiple clubs, sports, etc. It is mostly the same kids doing all of the different activities, so it's all about who you hang out with. I am definitely a CC nerd, so there are at least a few of us out there :D

And about Alaska being more redneck than the south, yep. It is, essentially in every place but Anchorage (where I live). Like what EHS09 said, most "Alaskans" don't consider Anchorage to be a part of Alaska merely because our lifestyle is more similar to typical mid-sized cities in the West coast. While the rest of Alaska is filled with either 1) Alaska Natives, 2) Redneck Republicans who love their guns, 3) hermits who hate people/are on the run from the law. (This is generalizing very broadly, of course!)
