Hi! I have two kids in high school (D is Sophmore and S is Freshman), and I am starting my college search. I have heard wonderful things about Rhodes both here at CC (thanks, Curmudgeon!) and from local sources (I know of two outstanding students who are Freshmen there now).

My inquiry is about the drinking culture at Rhodes. How prominent is alcohol use at Rhodes? How does Rhodes compare to other colleges (such as W&L, Vanderbilt, etc.) in that respect?

Thanks!

Hi Curious,

My son is a sophomore at Rhodes right now. My feeling is that the amount of drinking at Rhodes is about what you will find at most schools. I don't feel that there is any stigma attached to those who don't drink though. It is purely a personal decision. My son is loving his college experience. He is having to work harder than he ever had to in high school, but he certainly feels that he made the right choice.

Thank you CinciMom!

I just keep on hearing great things about the school!

I have no idea how my kids would react to alcohol (so far, no drinking, but they are still young), but I am a bit leery of those schools where drinking seems to be the focal point (and kids show off about "getting totally wasted.")

They are all bad about alcohol. I'd agree with "about the same". I'd also agree that tee-toatlers aren't harassed or needled. D is a non-drinker. Not that she hasn't had a glass of wine with her crazy Auntie, but just because it is her choice not to drink at this point in her life. She does just fine socially.

And cincimom, speaking of working hard, i think they may be trying to kill them. LOL. D has a a schedule that is a real mouthful. She can't spit it out and she's having a little trouble swallowing it. Had to happen someday. She'll learn to triage.

Folks, this place makes them earn their grades. Really earn them.

Yeah Curm., My S was kind of used to being able to do well with a minimum amount of work, and now he is discovering the joys of actually studying!
