Does anyone know what the policy is in the freshman dorms concerning alcohol? Are they going to lock us in jail if we get caught with alcohol in the room? Not that I'm a huge alchie or anything, I was just curious.

ummm don't they like kick you out? all i know is that if i go to cornell i'm hitting up all those frat parties/ upperclassmen parties. thats where you get all the booze. but seriously being a frosh doesnt suck. i know someone that went to cornell and he said the work is kind of hard but they party a lot--kind of a work hard/play hard thing they have there

The "policy" in our dorm is that if the RA knocks, we give her a shot :D.

We're lucky to have an RA that loves booze as much as we do. In some dorms, i.e. Donlon, the RA's are a little harsher, and people get written up. But its just a slap on the wrist (seriously, you can get referred to the judicial administrator like 3 times before anything happens). Also, it all stays within the university, so there are no legal repercussions; they don't charge you with a crime. And in order to get caught in the first place, you have to do something REALLY stupid. Like run down the hall with an open container, screaming, in a dorm where the RA actually cares. Or host a beer pong tournament at 4 AM and turn your stereo up as loud as possible. If you just want to drink in your room, there is really no way to get caught if you take care. And if the RA or other authority figure knocks, just get all the alcohol out of sight and they really cant do anything.

Cornell in general is incredibly lax about alcohol. The only thing they will get you for is open container or public urination. No one ever gets in trouble for just walking around campus completely trashed. Just being drunk is not a crime, or at least its not one that they have ever enforced.

Oh, and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa12, don't get your hopes up too much about the quality of the booze at open frat parties. The first few weeks or so it will be pretty good, then it will drop off, and by about halfway into the semester all they will be providing is Beast or, if you're lucky, Key Light. The upperclassmen parties that you refer to are usually hard to get into; you have to be on a list. Not that it isnt possible, but you have to know people. Parties at apartments in collegetown are usually a good time. Try and make friends with some upperclassmen; it will pay off.

Yes we have a work hard/play hard thing going on. You basically live for the weekends. Just wait till you get here; it's fun.

My brother has been to a few parties this year (not frat parties) for "keg" races (they use cans instead of a keg) and the only beer they used was Keystone Light and he said it was terrible. I prefer MGD but that is not a beer that should be used for keg races.

Beast is nasty. Always go for the mixed drinks. Some parties wont have them, but they arent that scarce. As for in the dorms, perro basically has it right. Just dont attract too much attention to yourselves. His RA situation is not quite the norm, either :-b. For mine, hes a alcoholic, but he doesnt want it in the hall much, though I doubt hed ever ACTUALLY write any of us up. Hes basically like "just dont make me do paperwork, and I dont care" :-b.
BTW, being JA'd three times will get you kicked out of the dorm. Two people have already been kicked out of mine, and someone who was kicked out of Donlon was moved into mine. Thing is, its always the same people who get caught over and over again.

PAthetic...Why would you want to drink? You know you have to take a 3hr tutorial on "alcohol consumption etc..." before you attend cornell?

What is one "good" advantage of drinking?

It's one thing not to drink, but I can't stand annoying people, like the above poster, who judge drinking without having tried it...unless you have, them I'm wrong...but you're still annoying. If you don't drink, good for you, but don't be obnoxious about it.

You refer to "good" advantages, but I have never heard of a bad advantage. Aren't all advantages good? Correct me if I'm wrong.

There are many advantages of drinking, such as good times, a lax environment, and a break from the excessive work-load at Cornell.

What's wrong with having a little alcohol-induced fun?

Or a lot of alcohol-induced fun...:)

Salvador Dali was drunk when he posted that.

Seriously tho, if you were serious when you wrote that post, I hope you have a single and isolate yourself from the rest of the population. Because, statistically, about 90% of them are going to be completely smashed on any given friday or saturday, and if you show your repugnance towards these "lesser beings who submit to vice and sin," then you are going to have some problems with people.

Who said keystone light is nasty? I've got a bone to pick with that person. Key Light is a beautiful beer.

Y'all better learn to love Beast. Someday I'm going to write an ode to the Beast...

I do not drink and never will....but still have the right to judge those who do drink. Youre wrong on one other thing: Im not a he...

And i hate posts that talk abt what your chances of getting alcohol, etc. are in college as opposed to a good education. This post is ridiculous and pathetic.

ha. stay in high school sdali87, cornell will hate you :)

No it wont, im talented and intelligent...and my mind is not gonna shrivel up...

Why can you have cider-induced fun?
lemonade-induced fun? etc...
I really see no difference

I knew somoene who was killed by a drunk driver....figures why Im like this

Anyway...lets forget this post and move on...

well thats just dandy, in talented and intelligent too or i wouldn't be here. i can't wait until you get on campus next year and go crazy when people on your floor come home drunk, stoned, or both and when everyone is hopped up on adderral during finals week. you should probably place yourself in your floor lounge and lecture everyone while handing out some cider and lemonade

Regardless of anyone's beliefs, drinking IS a part of college life and it deserves to be discussed. Perro, ducks, babe, spanks... feel free to continue the alcohol conversation, I'm enjoying it to say the least. :)

Many people don't drink at Cornell... and most people don't drink too excessively. However, many drink heavily as well. SO, its more of a float-your-own boat sort of thing. I'm really only annoyed if I get awoken by drunkards when I'm trying to sleep for an exam, and that, I feel, would be the only time I would actually report a disturbance to the RA.

Dali you are going to have a hell of a time living with people.

Cornellbabe posted it most truthfully; I agree with everything she said.

My roomate never touches alcohol, yet we coexist peacefully because he is accepting and just realizes that we have different lifestyles. Both of us respect each other's decisions and we are great friends because we can understand out differences.

However, it's people like you, who maintain a "holier than thou" attitude, and think people who choose differently to be inferior, that cause problems.

all this talk of drinking has made me thirsty....someone get me a rum & coke....and hold the coke...stat!

........ :)

ok this post is gong well. so the conclusion is--we won't get in huge trouble let's say if i have some alcohol in my room for safe-keeping? my dad will probably supply me with some when we move in. i use it responsibly and my roomate and i kick it once in a while. i'm not going to get kicked out of the dorm. that sound good? i'm really hoping so. i am looking forward to having fun at cornell. and yes dali, i will be studying a lot too you shouldn't condemn us for having some (responsible) fun.

i can have hard-cider induced fun; i can have mike's hard-lemonade induced fun... people drink, people do not. that's life. i think most things are worth trying atleast once, if not twice.

Mike's hard is nasty
