alcohol on campus

how prevalent is alcohol on campus? how strictly is underage drinking monitored?

It seems like they’re pretty serious about it, when I visited I noticed signs in the two different restaurants I ate in about underage drinking, Harvard’s policy, and the Cambridge Police’s policy. I didn’t see anything like that in any other towns I visited…

NOOOOOOOOOO. I love alcohol :(

They’re only serious about alcohol control in freshman dorms, i.e. no alcohol in the dorms even if you’re a 21+ freshman. Apart from that, monitoring of underage drinking is limited. Room parties rarely, if ever, check. Registered large parties that actually bother to serve alcohol will have a BAT (Beer and Alcohol Team) and they’re pretty serious, though, you can usually just hand off to each other. But really, just don’t get caught by Cambridge Police, and you’ll be fine.

As a city, Boston is comparatively strict when it comes to underage drinking at bars/restaurants.

At Harvard, you may get in trouble if you drink to the point that you get sick, but you will nearly never get in trouble for drinking underage… and alcohol is rather prevalent.

Quite prevalent.

Enforcement varies. Upperclassmen can have kegs stacked around their room and it is not against any rule. With freshmen, enforcement varies. Your proctor can be “strict” and actually threaten to do put you on a dubious “list” or he can be chill and not care. Those are the two extremes. And people here do drink their fair share.

Signs in restaurants are as meaningless as it gets.

Ok, yet another question. What is the typical cover fee for a party? Or do you guys roll more toward the BYOB thing?

Most big room parties, final club parties, or the like are free with (usually crappy) alcohol.

Something smaller with friends might be BYOB.

You’ll pay a small cover (~$5) for college events like the Leverett 80s dance, which have no alcohol. House formals cost $15-$20 and often come with an open bar (for those > 21). The only other parties with cover charges that I can remember happened senior spring.

what kind of ppl are let into finals clubs? is it your typical jcrew clad wasp?
