alcohol

what is the deal with the new alcohol prohibition?
is there still underage drinking at rice?
how often do most student drink, besides the ones who never drink?

I don’t even go to Rice, or have any knowledge, but my guess would be that it is going to be incredibly difficult to get high school kids to stop drinking, they can’t even do it with high school kids, so I don’t see how they could with college kids.

I’m going to point you in the direction of a few Rice Standard articles that I think discuss Rice’s alcohol culture very well.

I don’t drink at all–I’m just not interested. There are people at my residential college who drink quite a bit every weekend and there are people at my residential college who consume alcohol only once in a while and in VERY limited quantities on those rare occasions. It really just depends on the individual.

To address concerns regarding the “Ban on Hard Liquor”:
People seem to be taking it seriously, and rightfully so.

The alcohol probation regarding hard liquor is (1) enforced differently at each college, (2) less an issue of whether students are drinking and more an issue of whether they are drinking safely, (3) not at all impacting whether students drink underage, as it does not apply to all alcohol, and (4) on its way out.

The colleges are currently working on some proposals to pave the way for lifting the probation, and it will hopefully be lifted by the end of the year.

There is still underage drinking at Rice. The majority of students drink, but those who don’t drink generally don’t feel pressure to do so and are still included in the social life. Those who do drink vary widely; it’s all based on personal preference.

Exactly. Regardless of age, if you consume alcohol in a smart and subtle manner, you will be fine. If you make it incredibly obvious to RUPD that you are inebriated, you could be in trouble. For the most part, authorities at Rice avoid actively seeking trouble. If it shows up in front of them, they have to act.
