I got an email a while back from UF about the online ALEKS placement test for math courses, and was wondering what would prevent someone from cheating to achieve a higher score? I feel that this could potentially be an unfair way to assess a student’s math skills if there is no way to prevent it.
Nothing will stop you. However, if you get placed into a higher math or chemistry class than you can handle, it could lead to a bad grade or they may have to drop and then re-take the class. It’s best to be honest and see what the results are. If you’re not ready for the class, it’s best that you know that fact, and take a lower level classes.
A student would only be shooting themselves in the foot by cheating. College math is challenging even when you are placed at the correct level, let alone one that you aren’t ready for.
