I just committed myself to Penn State this morning, as a math major.
I was wondering about the ALEKS test though… Because I am a math major I should listen to MATH 140 right away, so I don’t want to screw up my ALEKS test.
Problem is I didn’t take AP CALC my senior yr in high school, and the highest math course I took is Pre Calc.
Btw, don’t know if this will help but I got a 34 on the ACT math section.
Any tips about the test? Any suggestions? Any word will be helpful for me…
Thanks!
It doesn’t test calc, only through precalc, and all you need is a 76 for MATH 140. You can also study and retake it if you don’t get the score you need.
I was thinking of trying out the practice ALEKS test on the ALEKS website.
Which module would I have to choose from?
Are you referring to Prep for Beginning Algebra, Prep for Intermediate Algebra, Prep for College Algebra, Prep for PreCalculus, Prep for Calculus, etc.? I believe those are the names of the learning modules on Penn State’s version.
Does the practice test make you choose which module to do? I am not familiar with the free trial.
Yes, that is what I am referring to. Which module does Penn State make me take?
If I understand your question correctly, it might test you on all of the ones I listed, which were copy/pasted from their website: http://advising.psu.edu/aleks/index.html I believe the test is adaptive, so if you do well on the basic questions it will test you on harder ones, and so on. So a student might breeze through the algebra and geometry or whatever and spend more time on precalc, or maybe their math skills are weaker so they stay in the basic section the whole time.
So the test determines what level you need the most work on, and then if you need to restudy and retake, it’ll give you the topics you most need to practice.
One last question, thanks for helping me out so much,
Do you know whether the Aleks score is a percentage or just the number (score) ?
I think it’s out of 100 so it should be the same either way.
