What is considered a decent score for the ALEKS? How do we figure out which math courses our major requires, or the gen-ed math requirements?
I placed in the 61-75 bracket. I am currently in DUS, however, I most likely will switch to Psychology. Is this score high enough for the requirements of this major? I cannot seem to find which math courses are required for DUS, Psych, or in General.
It’s purely a placement exam to ensure you get placed in an appropriate level. My son scored in that range as well. I have a chart, but not sure if I can figure out how to post it here. The range you are in is probably perfect. The courses in the 75+ range is basically for engineers and business majors.
It’s not letting me post the link to the chart, but just google Penn State Aleks score, and you’ll see the chart. You can also look at the gen ed info on the PSU website. Just google PSU bulletin or PSU general Education requirements and you should be able to find it.
@psu2023 you can retake but not sure how many times… highest score will be used for math placement but if you haven’t even taken it then you will not gain access to New Students Orientation (you can’t register until you attend one of these)
@PSU2023 - in the passed you would have three chances to take ALEKS (with 24 hrs in between sessions) - your NSO instructions should give you the information. There is no override to the ALEKS test. If you are using your AP’s you need to at least test into that level - eg To use AP Calc you would need to score at the highest level. Also look at the accepted range for AP classes for your degree to see the scores they accept.
The ALEKS assessment tests on math skills through Pre Calc so if you should not have a problem (you are a CS major right?)
My daughter took a dual enrollment Calculus class her junior year. She did score high enough on the ALEKS(80). However she did not have a math class this year because there was nothing available. Is she still able to take Math140(Calc1).
