Alexandre - question!

Hey man, I asked you awhile ago why it was taking so long for my acceptance...

Well, today is exactly the 12th week, and I got the letter and I was deferred (as expected due to the long wait), and I'm guessing my low UMich GPA 3.5 had somethin to do with it...

The sheet tells me to send my official transcripts right away (I sent my unofficial report card about 2 weeks ago) so I will do so tomorrow ASAP.

What do you think my chances are now that I've been deferred? Here are my fall semester courses and grades:

Core subjects:
AP Calculus: 3.8
Political Science Honors: 3.8
AP English: 4.0
Honors Physics: 4.0

Non-core:
Basic art: 4.0
Contemporary Catholicism: 4.0

*all core subjects are toughest offered in each department

I'm in the same boat =( Your senior grades look pretty good though, and my overall gpa was lower than yours to begin with. if you don't end up getting in, my chances are next to none. So...good luck to the both of us! :D

yeah...it's been hard being optimistic about it all, especially because I could tell I was deferred b/c of the long wait, it kinda makes me discouraged about the school, but I guess that's no reason to hold a grudge b/c any school that accepts me w/o thinking might not be that great of a school, at least this shows im goin to an awesome place

i think i've been deferred too. this is my tenth week, and they told me they reached a decision yesterday, and when i called today they said they haven't reached a final decision but sent something to me requesting more information. :( this sucks!

well in my situation, i called almost everyday during my lunch lol and asked them, all they kept saying was "12-14 weeks yadda yadda" and then i would ask "has a decision been made?" and they would say no...but eventually they came to the point where they would say it was under "final review process" and that's exactly what the letter said, it'll go under deeper evaluation etc.

so basically, they beat around the bush and keep you waiting sadly, and then let you know that you'll have to wait some more :)

I'm sorry that you didn't get in right away, futuretrojan. I'm actually slightly surprised with those stats (It also prolly had something to do with being OOS as well so I'm making another apology from that prospective). If it makes you feel any better, I'm prolly going to get a rejection from Northwestern in about a month (which makes me feel slightly foolish since that's basically all I've been talking about for forever - I think I'm good but not that good).

On a lighter note, I think you'll have a chance to put their thoughts in your favor with this year's grades so far. Don't lose hope yet. Good luck!

lol futuretrojan, i went through the same exact thing. no decision, 12-14 weeks, no decision... final review.

ya reeses, i've got a 1300 (1320 combined) but my GPA was completely depleted when you apply Umich scale to it - goes form a 3.7 to 3.5, and for OOS I have no doubts that 3.5 is too low for automatic acceptance unless it comes with a 1500 or somethin

ya mik, it's kinda depressing haha, after awhile i lost a bit of excitement although i've been trying hard to rekindle it...except, seeing the small envelope this afternoon in my mailbox and having my sister be like 'its from michigan' is not encouraging, but deferral is better than rejection any day

i need answers from the master himself! alexandre what do you think are my chances?

Futuretrojan, is is hard to predict admissions. Clearly, you have a chance otherwise you would have been rejected. However, it depends on the size of the applicant pool, the yield rate and the class size the admissions office has decided to enroll this coming fall. As of now, given your scores and grades and strong showing last semester, I would have to say Michigan is a 50/50. But your Michigan GPA and SAT are not going to help. Good luck, keep us posted and let us know if you need more advice.

When Umich places everyone in the deferral pool, are fall semester grades the biggest factor for students?

I am not sure. I would have to guess that the biggest factor is need. How many more seats do they have availlable? What demographic (race, gender, geographic location etc...) is needed most? Etc... Obviously, senior grades are also important, and yours will help. I think they will look at the entire package...your overall grades and SAT, your current grades and how you fit their needs overall.

well, if they want an Asian kid from Seattle, they gotta pick me!...do you think there's anything I could do extra besides send in my report? somethin to get their attention or show them I'm interested? I mean heck, I called almost every other day before I got my letter to inquire about my application status (took time off lunch!)

I just wish UMich didn't strip my GPA of so many points...I find the grading scale they use a little bit iffy, because it allows an average student to get straight 3.7's in any level of coursework and remain a perfect 4.0 on the umich scale...that's a big loophole, whereas someone like me who actually worked to perfect certain tougher classes might get a 3.6 in another, and then BOOM, my gpa for those to classes is averaged to a 3.5

i'm doomed. i doubt ANY school is going to want another asian southern california resident. will my legacy factor help much at this point? this is so nerve wracking. I hope you get in, futuretrojan, you sound like you really want to go!

Michigan's system is a little strange, I grant you. But even if your Michigan GPA were a 3.7, there are no guarantees you would have been accepted without being defered first. Michigan fools many people because of the 50%-60% acceptance rate. It is actually quite selective.

As for Michigan wanting an Asian student from Seattle...who knows? It depends on the kind of yield rate Michigan has from Seattle. Do most Seattle Asian students admitted to Michigan tell Michigan to go to hell, or do a good portion of them chose to enroll? It also depends on how many students from Seattle applied this year. So it is hard to tell.

No, it's not true that Michigan makes decisions on specific racial groups or geographic area based on expected yield for that group. For one thing, the readers simply don't know--they've been doing this for two years at the most. The counselors who give the second read might subconsciously remember stuff from the past, but I don't think that would influence their rating of the candidate.

alexandre..question..do you know Josh Hoe(coach of the debate team)?
