Pros and cons of the school? I know you have some built in biases :), but my son has expressed some interest in going there. He would prefer Michigan, but he probably won't get into Mich. He went to the Ohio State/ Michigan football game and he came away with the desire to go to a Big 11 school.

How would you rank the Big 11 schools?

He is interested in math, statistics, econ, business, and biotechnology.

Ohio State is a fine university. But if I were to rank it within the Big 10, it would not make the top half of the group. Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Illinois are definitely better and PSU, Minnesota and Indiana are arguably better.

Besides, OSU's campus isn't the nicest and Columbus isn't a pleasant city.

If your son really enjoyed the Big 10, he should check out Indiana-Bloomington or Wisconsin-Madison. Wisconsin is particularly strong in all the fields you mention.

... with tornadoes, hot babes, and no diversity. I went for Orientation, saw 5 semi-trailers tipped over because there was a Tornado that we came within 2 miles of hitting. I've never seen a tornado in my life in Ann Arbor, so people coming to UM, don't worry, haha.

Michigan never let me in. I'm still waiting on the wait list. So i'm not going over Michigan, because I didn't have the option. I wouldn't take any school in the world over Michigan.

you're still waiting? my friend is also still waiting to hear back from the wait-list. when do you expect to hear back? cuz she would like a decision soon also. anyways, have hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wait wait..so its now almost july..and ur still waiting?? what r u gonna do if its august and you finally realize you didn't get in?? what college r u gonna go to then?

U-M should notify all waitlist candidates (who are still on the waitlist) in the first part of July.

OSU is excellent in some things; I wouldn't slag on it generally. I think it's also important to note that like any flagship state school, it is going to attract its fair number of top "native" students, to boot. If you can get into the honors program (assuming they have one) it's probably a pretty good experience with great peers.

If Michigan lets me in, I will go. I wouldn't ever pass up on the oppurtunity to go there, even if it means getting early classes, having bad dorms (if one at all), not getting in all my classes, etc. However, I don't think i'm getting in, I would think they would have notified all accepted waitlist candidates by now, and everyone else is just awaiting an eventual rejection.

My son's final decision came down to OSU (honors program+a pretty significant financial offer) and Michigan. We are in state - Ohio, out of state - Michigan. While he would have been comfortable with OSU, Michigan ranked better in business, and he got into Ross pre-admit, so that clinched it.

I think overall OSU is a great school with alot to offer for those motivated enough to look. However, I wouldn't pay out of state rates to go there unless they were absolutely tops in whatever program you are looking for.

Like many other schools, a candidate's demonstrated interest should be an important factor in U-M's admissions decisions. And not just take at face value some bogus, insincere comments made in an essay. I have read more posts than I care to on the Michigan forums where admitted students are cavalier and apathetic, and really couldn't care less about the place..."I'll only go if I don't get into super prestigious colleges A, B, and C." Then, you have qualified kids like Wolves, who has done everything humanly possible to express his passion for the U, would cut off his right arm for an admit letter, so-to-speak. When I was a student, those were the type of kids that were fully engaged, had infectious enthusiasm, and gave the university its heart and soul.

It would be oos for Ohio State. Hmmm. Maybe my kid should shift his focus to Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, and SDSU (in-state) instead of OSU.
