I just read one of your posts where you suggested that a person select Indiana Business undergrad, save over $100,000 tution expense and possibly use the savings to apply to grad school. (person accepted at univ mich and another school). I am at the same sort of crossroads.

Ohio State is giving me value of in state tution + $4500 for 4 years (national merit finalist). I will be in the honors program with priority registration and other little goodoes and I have the ability to live in an honors dorm. I was accepted into Univ Mich engineering however they do not have an honors program and no specific dorm assignment etc. I have not received any merit scholarships and I am not eligible for financial aid. So I am looking at approx $152,000 for undergrad ($38,000 per yr) at Univ Mich vs $20,000 ($5,000) at ohio state.

I've been to both campuses for extended periods of time. Each have their pluses and minuses. I plan to go to grad school afterwards. Does your advise for the business major hold true for engineering too..in my case? what do you think.??

I know you are looking for Alexandre's opinion, but I just want to give u my perspective. It really comes down to if u think the advantages that a Michigan undergraduate education are worth $132,000. Whatever ur answer is to that question, i believe that is how u will determine where u will be next year. Either way tho, these are both far above average choices, so good luck with whatever u decide.

Eagle, this is a toughy! I will start with a few statements:

1) Indiana Business > OSU Engineering
2) Michigan Business = Michigan Engineering
3) Delta Michigan B => Indiana B is > Delta Michigan E => OSU E.
4) Bloomington > Columbus
5) Indiana campus > OSU campus

In short, Michigan engineering is quite a bit better than OSU Engineering and Indiana Business is a better option than OSU Engineering.

However, $130,000 is HUGE. My advice would be simple. If you come from a wealthy family, go for Michigan. If you come from a middle income family, I would probably recommend OSU. Avoid a big debt at almost any cost. Michigan is awesome...but it ain't MIT! LOL

Thanks for your advise. There will not be any debt incurred for any of my choices. Can you give me your thoughts on why um engineering is better than osu. I'm leaning towards mich but i must say it feels really good to get special attention from a university that wants YOU.

Michigan's salaries are for the 2003-2004 academic year...OSU's are for the 2004-2005 academic year, so the advantage is on OSU's side and Michigan still has significantly higher numbers...but it is not too significant.

So if you feel like you prefer the atmosphere at OSU, given the amount of money you can save, you should give OSU serious consideration. Michigan has a better reputation, but it does come at a high price. If you prefer Michigan to OSU in terms of atmosphere, then go for Michigan...otherwise, OSU seems like an equally reasonable option.

thanks..i plan to visit/stay with my friends on both campuses several times..take in a variety of classes and get away from the "canned" presentations of the admissions/1st yr experience professionals. You are absolutely right...the one that feels right is the one i'll take. Seems kinda funny with all the work you do to get into good universities and it comes down to the one you "feel" best at!! I'm just glad i have options. i'll keep you posted..

any ENGINEERS out there that had the same thing...why did you pick Michigan over all the other universities you were accpeted to.
