I am in Algebra 1 as a freshman and eventually I want to go to a UC college. Should I take both Geo and Alg. 2 next year/take Geo over the summer to catch up or should I just continue on with this? I think I can pull of taking Geo over the summer because I'm easily passing Alg. 1 without trying. Taking 2 math classes next year would be the harder rode to go. What should I do?

Take geometry in the summer. This will allow you to take algebra II and pre-calculus in your sophomore year, which will allow you to take calculus during your junior year.

That’s not really “catching up”; most people are in Algebra I in 9th.

^While I think it is true that the average freshman is in Algebra 1, someone aspiring to go to a UC should probably be in Geometry. In my district, taking Algebra 1 in 9th grade means you’re repeating it, as all 8th graders take Algebra 1 (or Geometry if they’re ahead).

Geometry over summer sounds like a good idea, but keep in mind that Geometry is completely different from Algebra 1, so don’t expect it to be easy just because Algebra 1 is.

@Ach7DD Unless OP has block scheduling, taking Algebra II and Pre Calculus in the same year is impossible.

^True. My school…only has 25% going on to a 4 year college, so no surprise that most take Algebra I in 9th.

FollowTheReaper is right, Geometry is completely different from Algebra, a lot of people at my school usually do well in Algebra or Geometry, and not as well in the other, some do well in all. Depends on you.

@Reaper:
He/She may, but it still is possible to take pre-calculus during the summer.

Savor your summers. Double up next year. It’s not as hard as it might seem, and it’ll show that you can commit to more than one thing in the summer.

I’m pretty sure algebra 2 is a prerequisite to precalculus…

Right, so OP takes Algebra II 1st semester, and Pre-Calc 2nd semester, if their schedule works like that.

My daughter is in 9th and chose to double up on Honors Geometry and Algebra 2. She struggled with Geometry in the first marking period, but is now up to A’s in both. She says that Algebra 2 is easy. I think the issue with Geometry is that it’s more abstract, and requires a different type of thinking.

If you decide to double up, I highly recommend lining up a math tutor who can help you through any rough patches.

I took Geometry and Algebra II in one year. It wasn’t too hard - I mean, you can learn one without having had the other.

Algebra II is typically a year-long course, and Precalc is typically one semester. You can, by all means, though, shove all of Algebra II into one semester if you so wish. You’ll just have to get through a chapter a day, probably (which isn’t hard if you’re doing it independently; Algebra II, like gardenmom said, is not as abstract as Geometry).

Don’t take algebra 2 over the summer, it is a lot of material that you truly need to understand for upper level math. Taking geometry over the summer should not be a problem though…

Actually I think you should take Geo during school year because of the SAT and second because if you take Pre-cal you’ll be really ahead not behind.

You’re not behind. CC just makes it seem like you are. You’re on the normal math schedule.

@Descuff I did not take geometry for the same reason OP does not want to (my school messed up my schedule freshman year and I was unable to get of Algebra 1)… That being said, with just a little bit of time with a private tutor I was able to learn what I needed to for the SAT (I got over 600 on my PSAT math this year).

Don’t let the SAT hold you back, the geometry on the SAT is very basic.

I took Algebra I as a Freshman and I took Geometry and Algebra II sophomore year. I wouldn’t try to rush things, you’re perfectly fine.
