Algebra 1 as a Freshman

Is Algebra 1 bad as a freshman math course if you want to get into Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, or Cornell?

Everything is relative. If that’s your school’s most advanced math class for freshmen, then you’re on the right track. However in many schools their advanced math course for freshmen is geometry and sometimes even algebra 2. So if you can get ahead more (like taking a summer math course) then you would become a more competitive applicant (with some drive).

Hope this helped!

Well if you are going to apply as an engineering, math or physics major, then taking Algebra I as a freshman is somewhat underwhelming. Can you study over the summer and take a placement test for the next higher math?

If you are interested in something non-STEM (i.e. like music or art) then your Algebra 1 in freshman year will not make any huge difference

Algebra one is the standard mathematics course for Freshmen across the nation. If you’re interested in majoring for potentially going into a job that involves mathematics, engineering, Physics, etc. You should definitely consider taking a math course over the summer. However, it is possible to take geometry and algebra algebra two at the same time during school year consider doing that next year. Also, through Stanford University online high school, you can take advanced algebra and then take precalculus with Trig and after that go directly to calculus BC which could definitely play to your advantage. Let me know if this helps!

Your math path could look something like this.

Algebra I --> geometry/ intermediate algebra through Stanford University online high school --> precalculus/Trig
–> AP calculus BC at your regular high school.
