I am currently taking pre-algebra as a 8th grades and is too easy for me. I decided take a summer corse,so which should I take algebra1 this summer or take take algebra 1 next year and take geometry on the summer. Also I want to take pre-caclus on the summer. So I can get to AP calculus AB. Also I am taking cemestry in 9th grade.
Algebra 1
You’ll have to take algebra two too.
It’s not a question of “or”. You have to take both at some point. Unless you’re going into STEM, ending high school with Pre-Calculus is perfectly fine for almost all universities (very few universities expect or even recommend calculus for incoming freshmen), so don’t rush to take Algebra 1 in the summer, but if you really want to for learning purposes, feel free.
Also, chemistry classes (unless they’re really basic conceptual chemistry classes) assume completion of Algebra 1, so you might not be able to take chemistry freshman year if the course offered at your school is math-intensive.
I’d say just take it during the year. I found pre-algebra easy in 7th grade but I couldn’t imagine going over quadratics and polynomials in one or two days…
Should I take both in the same year
Give a look at algebra1 on Khan academy before deciding. Pre algebra is super easy compared to algebra1.
Algebra1 can be done over the summer if you start on working now through khan academy. If you’ve lways been good at math and your teacher is nice, ask him/her for advice.
Then take geometry honors freshman year. Algebra2H sophomore year, precalculus H Junior year, calculus AB or honors senior year.
This is absolutely not meant to be snarky. But would you consider either a Keyboarding course or one on grammar?
I know that things are very informal here, but your post contained several glaring errors. If you’re so far ahead in math, why not work on what appears to be your weaker language skills?
I personally would not take any math courses over the summer. Summer classes are only around 5-8 weeks long. So, trying to cram a whole years worth of math in that short amount of time might be difficult.
I would suggest taking the following classes
Freshman: Geometry Honors
Sophomore: Algebra 2 Honors
Junior: Pre-Calc Honors/AP Stats
Senior: AP Calc AB
Doubling up in math is not necessary and remember that you must take stats in college anyway.
Furthermore, OP has not taken algebra1 yet so she/he would need to take it over the summer in order to start in Geometry. If the pre algebra teacher agrees and can help starting now, it could be a good plan to start in Geometry.
On the topic of doubling up, although doing so in your case is wholly unnecessary in terms of admissions (again, you’ll be fine almost anywhere with Pre-Calculus/College Algebra, as most places do not expect or even recommend Calculus in high school), if you really want to double up out of a desire to learn advanced math in high school, do so with Algebra 2 and Geometry sophomore year, as they don’t really build much on each other.
@April011 Actually, I think (s)he said that (s)he’s in Pre-Algebra as an 8th grader, so (s)he would start with Algebra 1. Also, I think @r2v2018 is right, my sister told me that Algebra 2 has almost nothing to do with geometry unless it’s infused with trig.
Talk to your current math teacher…ask if they think that taking Algebra this summer is a good idea for you. If so, then it might be good so you can get to calc by senior year.
When I was in the 8th grade, the math course they offered for normal students was pre-algebra. Students who were advanced got into Algebra I at the 8th grade level. My teacher noticed I understood most of the material on the pre-test, so she had me do a placement test to see if I could get into Algebra I. The only reason I didn’t get in was because I didn’t notice there was a back side to the paper. Because of that, I had to take Algebra I freshman year and then double up between Geometry and Algebra II/Trig my sophomore year. If your goal is to take AP Calc AB your senior year, I’d recommend you take a summer course focusing on Algebra I so you can be put into Geometry your freshman year. From there, you’d take Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and then AP Calc. Best of luck!
I recommend taking alg 1 at school because it is an important class that lays a base for future classes.
Have you taken biology already?
Do NOT take precalculus over the summer.
However between algebra1 and geometry I’d take algebra1 over the summer and Geometry during the year.
I took algebra 1 over the summer and got A+. it isn’t hard if you put all your strength into it and use your summer wisely.
Rather than cram it in over the summer, why not sign up for an accredited online Algebra 1 class in the spring?
I would not try to skip Algebra 1- if you’re set on doing a math quickly, do Geometry. I took Geo over the summer and didn’t have too much trouble with it. However, BE 100% SURE you have your Algebra 1 and Geometry fundamentals down. If not, it’ll bite you as you go into higher level math.
In regards to the previous post, I don’t think it actually matters very much to have a good grasp on Geometry. I took Geometry over the summer in high school, learned nothing, and went on to take higher math in high school in college without issue. So I would agree that if you’re going to learn something quickly during the summer, take Geometry rather than Algebra. It’s very important to thoroughly learn Algebra since it truly is the foundation for higher math courses.
Unless it’s changed, the path for math is Algebra I, Algebra II, pre-Calculus, Calculus — so if you take only Geometry over the summer, you would still be able to take Calc senior year.
