Algebra 2 Over the Summer? HELP!

Hello guys, I am an 8th grade student and I am doing Geometry right now, and I have been debating if I should do Algebra 2 over the summer so I can do Pre-Cal in freshman year. I would be 3 years ahead, would that look good on my resume or college application? Here is some information about my school. I need some help about finding some information on summer courses for Algebra 2 where I could get FULL credit for it. If you could help me that would be great. Do I have to go to Glacier Peak over the summer(If you don’t know could you help me find out, I couldn’t find information on this)? Or do I go to a Community College for the course (If so please list the college and location, and website link.) Thank you guys for helping so much!

@HealthyAsian I recommend not listing your current school, as we have no need to know it. Even then, you should be the one looking up credit policies at that high school. Many high schools offer dual credit; i.e. credit taken at a community college or university can be used towards high school requirements. If not, you may be able to test out of algebra 2.

If you decide to take algebra 2 over the summer, note that it can be intensive, as algebra 2 covers plenty of material. If you feel you can learn the material well, go for it. If you are taking it just to boost your college application, I wouldn’t do it.

@HealthyAsian I took Alg. II over the summer through CTY at JHU. It was a HARD class. I learned a lot and feel like I am ahead of my Pre-Calculus class. That being said, I think I would have liked to take it at a community college better simply because I like the classic classroom environment more than online learning. Remember, summer is a time to relax and hang out with your friends, NOT DO MATH!!

do it, a lot of freshman from my very competitive school took it over the summer and all are doing fine. Do it on byu online high school

I have a friend that did it and he said he was worth it because he is in AP Calc. this year (sophomore) which is very rare for my school. He took it at the local university, but the reason he did it is because he has a very strong passion for mathematics and is very good at it. I will say go for it if math is what you love…you should do okay.

3 years ago, I found myself in the same situation as you. Honestly, taking Algebra 2 before 9th was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Doing so allowed me to take AP Calc AB as a Sophmore, AP Stat as a junior this year, and still be able to take BC next year without taking two math classes a year. (I highly recommend taking AP Statistics in HS, statistics can be applied to any field from Buisiness, to Engineering, to Theoretical Physics, to Medicine.) To be honest, I’ve never heard of Alg 2 being taught at a college (my local community college offers nothing below Pre Calc). I recommend taking it at either your HS or a tutoring class, so you’d be with kids your own age, and not feel awkward sitting in class. Ask your guidance counselor if you could take Alg 2 during summer school at your HS, you’ll be able to take it free of charge this way. Hope this helps, good luck!
