Algebra??

I’m in 7th Grade, taking Algebra (which is a high school credit) and my grade for the 1st Semester is a B. My parents made me paranoid so… here I am! Anyways, I really want to get into a really good college, so will this hurt my prospects? And please, I beg you, do not tell me to “chill out, you have plenty of time” because that does not help in the slightest.

Wow I sound like a nerd

Middle school grades don’t matter much at all. Colleges can’t even actually get ahold of them, I don’t think (I can’t imagine why they would try to).

That said, I would try to talk to your teacher and try to figure out what it is you don’t understand. If you have gaps in your understanding in middle school, then high school level math will be harder for you. If you want to get into a “really good college,” you need to be able to maintain a high GPA in high school.

Also: why are you on College Confidential!! You’re in 7th grade! Oh my lord, please, take my advice and get off this site. Return in your sophomore year of high school, or if you’re feeling really proactive, the summer after freshman year. You’re too young to worry about college right now!

Good! Sound like a nerd! Take pride in it! This “nerd” will end up going to a great college, and then people who call you a nerd will end up working for you! I can’t imagine a greater compliment than being called a nerd.

Middle school grades will not be considered in college applications. Passing Algebra in 7th grade will place in Geometry in 8th grade so your Math sequence in HS will be advanced which will look good to colleges as long as you get good grades in HS

Some states put Algebra 1 on the official HS transcript…is yours one of them?

(It sounds like it, since you say “high school credit”.

This is the risk of taking classes early. B isn’t terrible. But Algebra 1 is the basis for most math thereafter; if you don’t get it fully, you may struggle later.

Having done Algebra 1 in 2 states with 2 different philosophies…one wouldn’t let ANY kids go past Alg 1 Honors in middle school (8th) and the other allowed both Alg 1 Honors and Geometry Honors in Middle school. The further advanced kids did not always get better grades. But they could finish more math classes in HS. There are pros and cons.

That said, they will know you took it early, so I wouldn’t fret about a B. Just try to pull it up, because it starts your HS transcript with 3.0 (or maybe slightly higher if weighted?).

PS Agree get off this site. Enjoy your childhood!

Okay, me being slightly concerned about college is nothing! There are kids at my school looking at jobs and planning for retirement. I am one of the more moderate ones.

Wow, it sounds like your school is pretty tough. I think you will be fine as long as you keep your grades up from now on. Also, looking at jobs and planning for retirement? That’s pretty intense.
