Algebra2 Grades

I am a sophomore who is having a really hard time with Algebra2. I have gotten a majority of A’s and a few B’s and have never in my life gotten below a B- till now. I am trying my best to understand the content I am being taught but I am unsuccessful. I Slipped by 1st semester with a B in Algebra2 but I am failing Algebra2 right now (second semester). I am wondering if it’s possible too somehow drop Alg2, teach myself the content and retake it next year as well as another math class too stay caught up while still being applicable for college. Note: I am taking the normal version of Alg2. I don’t take any honors or ap at the moment.

I have done some research and know it looks bad too have grades below a C. Is there anyway I can not screw up my chances of college if I end up failing Algebra2 in sophomore year?

Hey there! I am currently a sophomore in Algebra II Honors and ended with a 90.1 last semester.

Here are some ways to bump up your grade:

  • do all the extra credit, no matter how long or painful they are
  • truly and deeply understand all the concepts, and you can do this by…
    • watching videos on Youtube (khan academy is good but can be quite lengthy)
    • doing lots and lots and lots of practice problems (they will suck but will result in higher grades, trust me)
    • ask your math teacher for help if need be, as he/she will probably help you
    • ask friends for help (they’ll probably help you bc you’re friends with them)

Also, if you are struggling in normal Algebra II, this means that you are probably lacking fundamental algebra skills and knowledge. If needed, go back and review Algebra basics. You can ask your previous Algebra teacher if you can borrow textbook or just do everything above but for Algebra instead (in addition to Algebra II). Good luck and I hope you do well in your class

I'm a sophomore too, but currently taking Honors Precalc and Trig! Honors Algebra 2 was a ROUGH time, glad that's over now. I ended up getting As both semesters and my tip for others who will be/are taking the class is that there's not as much algebra as you think in the class. What I remember the most is graphing- if I remember correctly second semester was nearly all graphing and logarithms. Personally, I am terrible at graphing, but if you are good at it, second semester will be much easier than first.

The tip I give out is to MEMORIZE. Nearly everything in that class requires memorization, whether it's formulas or transformations in graphs, you need to MEMORIZE. Besides that, I would stick to the advice @needtosucceed27 gave!

Should you drop it?
If you are failing, are lost in the class, or have no hope/motivation of raising that F up, drop the class. Don’t stick to something if you can’t even follow along. Drop to Alg 2 and then next year double up with Hnrs Alg 2 and Hnrs Precalc. Hnrs Precalc, for me at least, is far easier than Hnrs Alg 2- everything is slowed down and much easier to understand (along with less graphing of course).

Hey there! I would say you probably can’t drop it at this point. If you do, I am unsure of the repercussions. At my school, if we drop a class we automatically get an F on our transcripts, so it’s like NO. Anyways, I got a 96% first semester (honors) and here’s my tips:

  1. I completely agree with @reallypanicked. Math is like a language. It builds upon itself. If you memorize how to do the problems, it’s easy. I think study guides are the best way to do this, because the questions are usually used on the test in some way.
  2. If you don’t know how to do a problem, ask friends. I’ve never seen the point in asking the teacher, because they were the one that you tried to learn it from the first time.
  3. Take thorough notes in class. If you don’t listen and evaluate the process of how you got the answer, you’re not learning.

Hope this helps!
