***All About LEPs***

I've decided to be helpful and tell you potential freshmen about LEPs and what they mean. Please note I'm a student and not an admissions officer so for the best most accurate info, just call admissions... or check their website.

LEP stands for Limited Enrollment Program. These are majors that, due to high demand, don't let any old idiot in. They all require you to complete certain gateway courses (that are required by the major anyway) and, in some cases, to undergo a competitive application process. Business and Architecture are the two that have a competitive application.

For freshman direct admits, congrats! You're in the major, so the goal is to just maintain a minimum overall GPA and get minimum grades in specific courses. After 45 credits, if you meet all the requirements, you're still in the major. That's it. No application process or anything else UNLESS you are an Architecture major.

For people who were put into Letters and Sciences, don't fret. For most of those majors, you just take the gateway courses, get good grades, and (generally) then do the change of major workshop for your specific program. For business majors and architecture majors, you'll have to submit an application. The Business school application includes a letter of recommendation or two, a resume, and a personal statement. The Architecture application includes an essay, portfolio, and two letters of recommendation.

I personally am an internal transfer in the Business school. That means I started out as LTSC and then got admitted into the Business school at the end of the last semester. If you have any questions about that specific process, either post them in here or PM me.

LEP INFORMATION
Hopefully that post was helpful, but here's the LEP website with the specific details for every LEP major:

thanks! 10char

what about transfers from other schools?

Transfers from other schools (often called external transfers in the LEP files) follow the same thing as people who were admitted to Letters & Sciences.

do you know what the % of people who apply to the business school and get direct admit is?

do you know what the % of people who apply as internal transfers and get admitted to the business school after reapplying is?

How hard is it to go from freshman connection to an LEP?

Mass345, I’m a junior at UMD. It’s not any harder to get into an LEP as a freshman connection student than it would be as a regular student. You might be a semester behind (although you shouldn’t be if you can get the classes you need during freshman connection)

People on this forum ALWAYS freak out about LEPs. I did too when I first came to UMD. They’re not as scary as you think. Business does require a high GPA, but transferring/getting in for spring semester/ freshman connection have no real effects.

Hey ThisMortalSoil,
I am a direct admit to Smith School of Business. I looked online and saw that the minimum gpa is 2.0. Do you or anyone else find it hard to keep this gpa? Personally, I feel like I could do it easily but that is just based on my HS performance. Also, is there anything I need to know about enrollment for classes e.g… when can I enroll for classes or when should I contact the advisors to get my schedule down? Any input is appreciated. Thanks

@powder With regards to #2, it varies from semester to semester. Everyone seems to throw around figures like 40% and 50%, but according to one admissions person and my accounting II professor it’s closer to 70%.

@Ravensfan, I hate to sound like an arrogant know-it-all but I don’t think it’s that hard to keep a 2.0. That’s a C average… some courses are tricky and lord knows I’ve straddled the A/B line too many times, but if you do the reading, do the homework, go to class and ask for help when you need it, you’ll be fine. The hardest class of the gateway courses, at least for me, was statistics… got a B- in it.

IIRC you enroll at orientation. If you take Macroeconomics first then I suggest Dr. Neri if you can get him.

Hey, I got into the Smith School of Business as an undecided business major… What do I do now? lol

You can take BMGT110 which I think gives an overview of the different majors (I never took it). Once you figure out which major you want you just talk to your advisor and they change it in the system.

Hey im really nervous about getting accepted into UMCP , well im going to be transfering into CP with a associates of science transfer degree from a community college and i have a 3.3gpa and im also a in state student so im frustated and im thinking that im not going to get into their Biology LEP program. Im also a pre-dental student if that helps

Just to add to the “don’t freak out” posts, my brother got into the business school as a freshman despite a 3.2 GPA and ~2000 SAT.

Engineering isn’t a difficult LEP to get into?

Yes, engineering is a difficult LEP to get into. Of approx 5000 applicants, they only accepted 1625 as direct admits to Clark School of Engineering. The average HS GPA was 4.2 and average CR/M score on SAT was 1381, with 75th percentile average at 1460 and 25th percentile average at 1320.

Oh yeah I know engineering is difficult. I was just wondering why he wrote “Business and Architecture are the two that have a competitive application.”

Yodelo, from what I remember when I was doing all this LEP stuff, business and architecture both actually deny people even if they meet the requirements. They size you up against all the other applicants. It’s like re-applying to college. I remember my advisor called them “competitive LEPs” so that’s what I’ve called it since.

Whereas other LEPs (criminal justice for instance) only require you to meet the minimum requirements. As long as you meet them, you will be admitted.

What can you tell me about LEP for journalism? How competitive is it? Is it easy to be admitted to the journalism program?

Hey how about the Biology LEP program is it hard to get into, im pretty nervous about it, im going to transfer in with a associates of science transfer degree from a maryland community college with a 3.3GPA wat do u think my chances are??

I don’t think it’s very competitive. Unless they got a really high number of applicants one year for the j-school or something, I think most people who get admitted to the university would make it in. I’m in the j-school and that’s the impression I’ve got.
