All about Tulane

My D has a pretty good list of schools that she will apply to in the fall but she is just going through the motions with most. Her heart is set on Tulane. Her stats: SAT 1980 ACT 29 WGPA 3.6 and UWGPA 3.3. 1 AP in junior year and is registered for 2 APs & 1 honor class in senior year. She goes to a very competitive HS in the southwest that no longer ranks. She has very good ECs that include serious community service and has shown the school a lot of interest. Any advice? Anyone know her chances? Her list includes Bucknell, U Richmond, Northeastern, U San Diego & Santa Clara U. Thanks

Every application is different, but if it helps, this year my daughter applied with a 28 a ACT, about a 3.7 w and 3.5 uw gpa, and she was deferred. Also goes to a top hs which does not rank. We are supposed to find out by April 1 if she is accepted. Supposedly, Tulane is accepting less students, and I think apps are up. Every year it seems it is more difficult. So you daughter is definitely qualified for Tulane, but not certainty she will be accepted. I can assure you your daughter will get accepted into a fine school with her numbers, be it Tulane or a different school.

My daughter applied to about 12 schools, has been postponed by 2…Tulane and Wisc…Rejected so far only by Chappel Hill as out of state student (knew it was a reach) and got accepted into all the rest…many with scholarships as high as $16,000 per year.

Rather than “chance” her, let’s just say that her stats are right around Tulane’s midpoint (I would only send the SAT, it is better than her ACT), maybe a hair below but very close. The serious community service definitely helps, the AP courses helping or not depends somewhat on the offering in her high school. If they only offer a few, then OK. If they offer a bunch, then her overall strength of schedule will look fairly average at best, but again this is not really a negative, just not a strong positive. Also, hopefully she is having an above average semester now. It always is better to have the most recent grades be stronger than in the past.

The best thing she can do is apply as soon as the application process begins in early September, apply SCEA, and show as much interest in Tulane as possible by attending local events, visiting the school if she can, and absolutely she will need to complete the “Why Tulane” question. Which leads me to ask, why is her heart set on Tulane?

Fallenchemist, she loves the community service and global focus of the school. We know several alum and she is impressed by their passion for the school. It is the size and location she is looking for. She likes the mix of school spirit and academic rigor. She is unsure of her major but Tulane is strong in several areas that she is interested in. And oh yeah, the food in NOLA.

Those reasons sound very solid. Should make for a great answer to the question. Best of luck to her.

fallenchemist is by far the expert. I would like to add one thing that really helps and that is double or triple the letters of recommendation if you are certain this is her #1 choice. That shows interest that does not go unnoticed. My son was deferred in December 2010 and 12 letters of recommendations (plus a Christmas card) later he was accepted on January 7, 2011 well before other deferred students. He also made the trip and met the admissions representative that was receiving the letters. She just laughed and said he really took “showing interest” to heart. He did and it worked! LOL

To that I would only add to apply SCEA (single choice early action) so that they know it is her #1 school.
