ALL INDIANS HELP ME OUT

Do you need financial aid?

No … i dont need Financial aid … can u ppl suggest some match Uni’s and some safeties ?

and some reaches

Have you or are you planning to take SAT subject tests? Because these tests can upto some extent compensate for the grades.

When is the last date on which i can write the SAT 2 ?

Which uni’s should i apply 2?

well sry to say but ur grades are not good enough to get u to top universiies.
But u can get good universities if u get good score in sat 2.
U shud get atleast 85% in class 12

Well your 11th marks are not gonna help, that’s for sure. Try Purdue for a reach?

I can aim for 85% … The problem is tht i have to apply this December
and my board results are next year

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/729970-all-cbse-people-help-indian-out-please-2.html

I just cant understand … . people on this thread tell me smething else …

Where should I apply then after purdue ?

Umm… Brownie- I’m not trying to be rude or anything- but 78% for your Boards and 50+ish for the 11th grade just aren’t gonna cut it, in my honest opinion.
The fact that you play in three school teams is good- but then you don’t have anything to offer beyond that. With or without aid- the chances at the schools “letsgo123” mentioned- Northwestern, Cornell, UCLA, Duke, MIT and Dartmouth- aren’t really realistic for you. I’m going to UCLA- so I can say about UCLA- the only 2 people I know (from Delhi) headed to UCLA (who’re NOT american citizens) had a 90%+ for 9th, 10th, 11th and the 12th grade. Plus they had really awesome ECs too (student council, olympiads, bands, student-group-executive-committee-positions and all). And I’d expect the others to be equally competitive.

See- if you don’t have a limit to the number of colleges you apply to (I’d suggest you do few, focused applications than like 15 applications without working on each one properly).

I’d say some schools you have a good shot at are:
Purdue, Gatech, UIUC, UC Davis, UC Irvine, Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Drexel.

Let’s face it- international admissions are VERY VERY competitive- and just being pretty decent- and above average doesn’t make the cut at the places letsgo123 suggested in the other thread there. So- in my opinion- you should be realistic- apply to these schools- and maybe **uMich, Ann Arbor/b. I’d say you should limit yourself to like 6-7 out of all these places (surely include uMich) and give your BEST in terms of essays and everything else- and work hard for the SAT 2 and for your 12th grade.

Hopefully it’ll all go well…

I’m really sorry if I come across as too direct, but I really think it’s better that we at CC be realistic and true- rather than just sugar-coating stuff and name awesome-sounding colleges- cuz that wouldn’t help you! So yup! Best of luck with everything!!

PS: Also consider going to a Californian Community College (EVERYBODY can go there) and then work hard for the first year and transfer to UCLA or UCSD. Your chances of acceptance will def. be higher then- assuming you don’t screw up at the CCC- cuz they don’t see your high school performance then. Yup. But then again- there’s the risk that you might screw up and end up graduating from the CCC which would be pretty crappy- so take this risk if you have enough faith in yourself… and the fact that you’ll be able to have a 3.8ish GPA at the CCC. :)

Purdue, Gatech, UIUC, UC Davis, UC Irvine, Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Drexel.

What abt a few matches ?

And safeties ?

Do u think I really don’t have a shot at UCLA or any other prestigious University ?

I am really screwd up

Thanks … and please let me know …how do i get in to a better college ?

I am taking a summer job though !

Any 1 else with more suggestions ?

Thank you

Well- I don’t really know TOO much about these universities- since I didn’t apply to most of them- and know about them through friends who applied.

Frankly, chances are very abysmal at the top places. You must understand that UCLA, Duke, Northwestern et cetera and all are VERY hard to get into- even for ninety percenters. Your marks really do put you at a major disadvantage. I’m just trying to be as frank as possible here.

And no, dude- you aren’t screwed up just yet. uMichigan is a REALLY good college- among the best in the States. It has an engineering programme arguably better than us (though I preferred UCLA for the overall name and everything- and put down Mich, but that’s just me). So yeah- put in your VERY best for uMich, UIUC and Penn State (which are all amazing!)

I’d say- (in all my n00bness)

Reaches: uMichigan, UIUC, Gatech, UC Davis
Matches: Penn State, Purdue, UC Irvine, Drexel, Rutgers
Safeties: Virginia Tech, Michigan State.

Yup- if I were you, I’d apply to uMichigan, UIUC, Davis, Penn State, Purdue, Drexel and Michigan State. Plus, I’d consider UK as an option. And if you think you def. wanna go abroad- I’d also consider Californian Community Colleges and working my arse off the first year and then transferring to a UC (this saves money as CCCs are cheap) plus you might even end up at UCSD or even UCLA, if you do very well!) :)

As for getting into a better college- well- it’s probably too late to pimp up your CV now- so I’d say you should work on your academics- make your teachers love you and write you good recommendations, work hard on your essays and university applications (especially the reaches)- and take the SAT 2- and maybe even retake the SAT 1 and try to push it over 2100-2150ish… (as far as I know- Purdue and Gatech are suckers for high SAT people!) Oh- and if you must, try doing some community service- work with an NGO over the hols or sth!  Makes you look good! lol! Though I’d suggest you focus on the acads!! Hope that helps!

Thnx Dude …

Any1 else who wud agree with Tuna or has more suggestions ?

Please .
TY

UK ? … .which universities shud i chck out over there ?

@Brownie:

For UK- considering your position, I’d suggest the following.

Impossibles: Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL (Don’t really bother applying to them since UK is VERY VERY VERY grade-centric when it comes to admissions.)

Reaches: UCL, Warwick, King’s College London (if you somehow raise your mid-year grades and predicted grades).

Matches: Manchester, Essex, Southampton, Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh.

Since UCAS (the common-application equivalent for UK) only allows you to apply to five colleges- I’d suggest you try for King’s College, Warwick, Edinburgh, Manchester and Bristol! :)

BUMP … any1 else ?

I spoke to my parents … They want me to go to the U.S. only …

Canada is an option for me …

ANY 1… please !

Bump any1 …
