Hi there, this is AvonT, and international student planning to go community college in CA. I have just applied De Anza College and Santa Monica College and wait for the I-20. I know here has many students used to studied or still studying in community college. Here are my questions.

Do you guys transfer from one states to the others?

Do you guys know De Anza college and Santa Monica college?

Is it possible for students transfer from community college to Ivey school?

Is it possible for students transfer from community college to some famous universities, such as UCB, UCLA, USC, etc.

I hope you guys can share your experinment to me. I am so worry about that.
Thanks

1) No. A Cali state student with international status (not F-1)
2) Hell Yes. De Anza Pride !!
3) Possible if you have a damn good HS record and SAT scores to back you up. Since you are an international student, an olympiad award etc would really help.
4) Yes it is definitely possible...I am the proof, UCLA, UCSD, UCD etc

Yes, read the other threads on this discussion and you will find that a lot of us got into Ivy schools and UCLA and Berkeley, as well. I personally got into Columbia, UCB, and UCLA to name a few and I am transferring from a community college. My advice to you would be to stop worrying, get involved and do well in an Honors program, receive an excellent GPA and you'll be sure to get into a very good school. The program is called TAP. I would suggest Santa Monica college because it was very well-respected within the UC system....

Also, establish California residency so that when you transfer to UCLA or Cal (Berkeley), if that's possible.....but it's worth a shot.

My high school records are not pretty good. Beside, I dont have any nation award. But i will be very hard working in Community college. For me, Ivey is my goal. I will try my best and get the highest GPA!

I'll answer your last two questions. It is possible for a person to go from a CC to an IVY. I was looking at applying to Cornell for a long time, and at a point was toying with the idea of Harvard. I did not end up apply however because of the money involved. As far as going to another big university, I just finshed up at my CC and am starting at UCLA in the fall, so yes it very much is possible. Just get good grades, and if possible, try to join an honors program.

AvonT, yes I am transferring from a community college. As I mentioned before, I am studying in De Anza College. This fall I will be studying Computer Science @ either UCLA or UCSD.

Also, my high school result is really bad... just 2.x and have Ds, Es...
Do the schools consider my HS results?
If I work hard in Community college. Do you think i can make UPenn, Brown...etc...

Well yeah, everyone will look at your high school GPA, but if you've spent two years at college pulling a 3.8-4.0 then the importance of your HS grades is going to seriously diminish.

there are exceptions to this

like the one i already stated. the UC system does not look at high school grades and SAT scores if you apply as a junior level transfer.

I came from a CC and I got into Penn, Georgetown, Hopkins, Tulane, and Yale. It is definitly possible. I read in an issue of the Nw York Times where Ivies and top U's were starting to really admit CC students because, somehow, CC students had a more mature perspective on academics and it is being perceived that CC transfers work harder and take college more seriously. In summary, that's what the article was stating.
