Ariiteee so all you people big in speech and debate/forensics or whatever. ok.

this summer i want to go to FFI (Florida Forensic Institute) at Nova High School. If anyone knows someone who has gone or you have personally done the program please tell me?

What kind of debate do you do? Policy? LD? Congress? Parli? Public Forum?

I'm an LDer. As far as the best LD camps go, I'd say Victory Briefs Institute is a good place to start for someone who is new to the debate world. National Symposium for Debate is pretty good too, although it would be better after at least a year of debate.

For Policy, I've heard from my policy debater friends that Stanford National Forensics Institute is pretty legit.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

I had so much fun at debate camp. I met amazing people (my roommate was basically THE perfect roommate. My future college roommate has some pretty high standards to live up to) and I learned philosophy and critical theory and a bunch of stuff I'd never even heard of in school.

It's a really awesome experience. And there are actually a considerable amount of hot guys (and girls, if you are a guy...or girl who digs girls) at debate camp too (believe it or not).

I have only once met a hot person in debate, and that was just relatively hot, so wow! And, what exactly do you do at debate camp? Just learn about phiosophy and stuff? I don't no how thrilling that sounds. Oh and, where did you go?

Well the curricula/activities are going to vary from camp to camp, but the usual setup is that they sort you into groups called labs. So for an hour or two each day, you meet up with your lab and your lab instructors assign resolutions and you typically debate. Then you go off to various lectures that you can pick and choose at the start of camp. The lectures range from general debate tips to hardcore debate theory to philosophy to argumentation and others (I could go on forever). THen there are some lectures that are given to ALL camp members, like topic analysis and others. And at the end of the camp there is usually a tournament where the campers get to apply everything that they've learned.

I went to Victory Briefs Institute at UCLA. It was amazing. I learned a lot and I still reference the files i have from time to time. THe food at UCLA is superb as well--I gained 10 pounds at camp. haha.

Stories from camp:
-This one time, at debate camp, there was this girl in the room next to me who claimed she was a lesbian (and put up photos from a Victoria's Secret catalog all over her room). She then gave some guy a blow job on the last day of camp. Go figure...

-I made friends with the guy in the room next to me (co ed dorms. boys and girls all live on the same floors) because he kept getting kicked out due to the fact that his roommate loved to make out with his girlfriend.

-The instructors took us to a movie and to the beach. That was a MAJOR plus side of going to debate camp in LA. Oh and we went to Third Street Promenade, too (a major shopping pier). Of course, since we were debaters, we saw some protesters in the street and picked fights with them.

To soccerstar18: Yeah, Congress isn't offered at most debate camps. If finding a legit Congress camp becomes too tough, your team could pool together money to hire a an ex-Congress champion during the summer and get him/her to coach you guys privately.

Champ55: Obviously, debate camps aren't needed. Even debate itself isn't needed. But I'm just saying that debate camp is an amazing experience and it has helped me in many areas other than debate, such as school and general knowledge. I'm sure that with pure determination and hard work, anybody can get up to speed with debaters who have been groomed by debate camp instructors. But I find that debate camp is a really great thing to have under your belt, especially in a debate world where the style is changing rapidly and it's often difficult to keep up.

Really? A debate movie? Hmm. Never heard of one. But once it comes out, I want to see it.

This is the part where I propagandicize (I know that isn't a word):

LD DEBATE IS SO MUCH BETTER for these reasons (and more)

NO PARTNER! :) You can go or abstain from going to tournaments without having to be obligated to your partner's wishes!

Less speed! LD's speed is MUCH less than varsity policy speed in rounds!

The transition will be SO easy because of your knowledge of kritiks and theory and ads/disads and topicality/education/fairness voters!

No more hauling around those fatty tubs...unless you want to, of course

Not as much "MY EVIDENCE IS BETTER THAN YOURS", but more of "My evidence proves this, which proves this, which is why my opponent loses"

The partner thing isn't a bad thing! Seriously! The best teams I've seen, the partners seem to be able to read each other's minds. It's awesome, and hard work, and just, well, makes it amazing to watch!

Hrm...speed...it's not long though, most of the debates I've judged take about 40-45 minutes. And well, to be able to talk for that amount of time, etc. really takes a well developed plan of attack. Or of course, amazing bs'ing skills.

Number 5 though...I don't understand...isn't that the same with policy debate? Do you have to have the evidence with you on LD debate?

Fatty tubs, are, amazing. ;D I mean, why WOULDN'T you want a briefcase/tub with the contents equitable to a small rain forest? Ahah, just kidding, on this one you win.

Well we have evidence in LD, but it's more of a focus on logic. We don't cut as many empirics cards as you guys do because theory is also something we're catching onto.

haha. Well I love Policy kids too. Because all the IE kids are really snobby and don't really associate with the debaters :(

^Finally, someone who doesn't try to call Congress 'debate' and thus squash the unique facets of each activity.

I tried Congress once. I had no idea what to do, and those little colored cards confused me immensely. The PO was really hot, though. :) Swooooooon

colored cardss? huhh? ive never seen a colorered card. haha. anyways. who here is going to emory for the barkley forum this year. or was anyone at blue key?
