All EA Applicants, READ THIS (btw, it's long)

We've only seen a few acceptances on the CC forum so far...and except for the one on Matt's Blog, i haven't heard of a single rejection or deferral. Right now, i'm pretty worried about my decision, because one of my very good friends received his tube yesterday, and nothing's arrived in the mail for me yet. I think most of you are with me, thinking that if our mail hasn't arrived yet, it must be a deferral...but I really doubt that. Of the people who reguarly post on the forum, only one, stasterisk (btw, congratulations!), has posted an acceptance. I've read these forums a lot, and a lot of us are GREAT students, and i'm sure many of us will be accepted, so i highly doubt that you've been deferred/rejected if you haven't gotten anything yet. apparently, there were many people last year who receieved acceptances VERY late, and ended up calling to find out. They release decisions over the phone starting friday for a reason: USPS is not perfect. they know that some people won't receieve their decisions, and that doesn't mean people will be deferred, because they might as well have said, if you don't get your decision by friday, you're deferred, better luck next time. But that's not the case, so even though it's hard, try and keep it together these next couple of days. I thought my decision was going to come yesterday, and then i was SURE it would come today. I raced home after school, checked my mailbox, and there was nothing from MIT. But COME ON, we applied to MIT, we're used to doing hard things...so we should be able to wait a couple of days.

AND NOW, for those of us who have been or believe we will be deferred:

This past year, two of my friend's fathers passed away. A month ago, my friend's mother was diagnosed with three different types of cancer. Her doctor predicted that she had 6 months to a year left. She passed away last week. Guys, i've been just as (or much more) stressed about MIT than you, and today, when i was driving home to check my mail, i realized how petty this seems in the grand scheme of things. Yes, MIT is an amazing school, but it's not the only amazing school out there. And i know SO many successful, happy, truly AMAZING people who didn't go to any of the "top" schools in the country. It's all what you make of it...and we're all smart and resourceful enough to make something of almost any school out there. who knows? maybe you'll be deferred and it could be the best thing that ever happened to you. Maybe you'll end up at a school that you are completely in love with, and you'll end up wondering why that school wasn't your first choice. I havne't really heard of many people saying they absolutely hate their school, and can't wait to transfer, so that must be saying something, right? My cousin is a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, and Johns Hopkins was her first choice. She was crazy about it, the same way that i feel about MIT, and she was rejected. I don't know how, because she's brilliant...but she was rejected, and was accepted into UPenn. She's traveling abroad in europe right now and she's having the time of her life. I can't see her being happier anywhere else. just have faith that things DO work out for the best in the end.

GOOD LUCK to everyone. I don't really know any of you that well, but from what i've read and heard, it seems like you all deserve to get in...it's just luck of the draw after a certain point.

Here's a good line from Ben Jones's blog from last year:

"Please, please, don't take the MIT admissions decision as any indication of your potential. You are all superstars, truly. And each of you is going to make the world a better plae, whether or not you go to MIT. "

amen brother, amen

I will be satisfied with wherever i get in, i just want to hear from MIT early so that i can relax and start "senior slack" before march.
But im getting antsy, as no letter has come yet to me (VA).

i know exactly how you feel...

w00t. that was a really excellent post.

applauds

thanks, I needed that

I personally never applied to MIT when I went through the application process last year. (I'm not afraid to admit that all of you are so much smarter than I am. I wouldn't have stood the slightest chance against any of you. :)) However, I did read this thread today since I think that the EA/ED decision time is an interesting one no matter where you apply.

This quote stood out to me from the above post:
"It's all what you make of it...and we're all smart and resourceful enough to make something of almost any school out there. who knows? maybe you'll be deferred and it could be the best thing that ever happened to you. Maybe you'll end up at a school that you are completely in love with, and you'll end up wondering why that school wasn't your first choice."

For those of you who will end up being deferred and/or rejected... Take these words to heart. They're so true. You will end up at a college next year, and you'll be surprised how much you'll enjoy whatever situation comes your way. From someone who is living proof of the above words...

we're almost there...just a couple more days

well said!!

You rock SA, this is awesome.

everyone who was deferred...read this thread. i was deferred and i've gotta say, it really helps deal with the whole process. and don't worry, there's still a LOT of hope for us...at MIT or at other schools. They're going to take a bunch of EA deferrals in RA...so i'm really hoping for that right now.

everyone who was accepted: congratulations! it must feel amazing to receive that tube...i just hope a lot of us deferrals will get that experience later on.
