All hope lost?

Hello all,

I've been lurking around CC for quite a while now, and decided to make an account today to ask a question.

I received my decision from UChicago today. After getting deferred back in December, they rejected me. I was quite disappointed, not because UChicago rejected me, but because I felt like I have no shot at other schools of the same caliber if not better.

My question is then, are there any other CCers on this thread that was previously rejected from UChicago but ultimately accepted into the likes of Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, etc.?

I’m in the same boat as U r,Ccer…
Ater being rejected by Harvard in the SCEA,
I received decisions from Franklin & Marshall,U chicago and MIT…
REJECTIONS from all.
I hab applied to Princeton,too.
I wonder if not in colgs like F& M,how come getting into Princeton??
But,there’s smthg(I don’t know wat) that’s persuading me keep holding on to Princeton’s decision…I believe I’ll get in.
THERE’S ONLY ONE PLACE FOR EACH OF US.
We can’t attend everywhere; So,y expect acceptance frm everywhere we apply?

Yes, there certainly are applicants who are rejected from one top school, but accepted to another. All schools look for different things and at one point admissions become almost random, e.g. Harvard may be looking for a trumpet player, but Princeton for a drum player… Just to give your an idea.

Just remember that you are a very clever and smart applicant. Don’t let your rejection get in the way! You were not rejected from the EA pool, you were deferred, which shows that if UChicago had more places it would have liked to admit you.

Not all places are looking for the same type of applicant. I was waitlisted for UChicago, but got a likely letter from UPenn last week.

Don’t lose hope!

Every university is looking for something different, it is one of the reasons why I actually decided to apply to the States - they will only really choose you if they think you will make up a great part of their campus. The more different/peculiar you seem to be, the less likely you’ll be accepted to a lot of different unis, probably just a handful.

I have been suffering from the same feeling of pointlessness and doom, but I still have quite a lot of unis left that are so different from the ones that I have applied to, as well as where I have inherently added extra enthusiasm in my writing just cause I do like them that much more.

Stay positive and only start freaking out if worst does come to the worst, and then get over it by channelling it towards something useful and productive.

I have friends who got rejected from ‘second-tier’ schools (not talking about UChicago here!) who got into Princeton. It’s something of a lottery, honestly, and definitely NOT a judgment on you as a person.

Of course all hope is not lost. I have heard stories of people who were rejected everywhere (20 schools they applied) but accepted to harvard. Decisions are really random in the end.

One of my friends had really bad luck in the Midwest (rejected by UChicago, WUSTL, and Northwestern). Didn’t do too well in the Ivies either but he got into Yale.

I was rejected by U Chicago as well and I was pretty upset for a while but I do not think this means I will get rejected from Princeton as well, and same goes to you! I know someone who got rejected from bunch of schools (not top schools) and got into Princeton. Don’t lose hope!!

I got into Princeton SCEA and was waitlisted at Chicago. It’s nbd.

Keep hoping! I was waitlisted at U of Chi and recieved a likely from Cornell the same day! Every college is different. Be strong.

Hey man, I am in the same state as you are, if not worse.

I am an international student asking for financial aid (most detrimental part of my app).

I got rejected from Cornell (ED), Colgate (ED II), WUSTL.

Its all a game of luck, you never know whats in store for you and where. For all I know, there is always something good lurking in the shadows of the bad that happens, so you just gotta keep hoping man. Dont ever lose hope. Look up clear. It will all work out eventually.

A big thank you to all those that replied. I feel a bit better now after reading what all of you have go to say.

I guess many of us are in the same boat. It was never the rejection that I feared, but rather the pity and disdain those that had high hopes and expectations in me would feel after hearing about my rejections. I’m so afraid that those around me would look less of me and feel that I’m less worthy of their time. For all those that are wondering, I’m an international applicant taking the IB. Several of my close friends have already received offers from top UK universities, i.e. Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, and I’m here alone, with my deferral–>rejection from UChicago, and also an ED deferral from Columbia. I don’t have any special, eye-grabbing skill, nor am I an alumni, athletic recruit or URM. I’m just an ordinary teenager, like many of you CCers on this website, with good grades, decent standardized tests, recommendations, ECs and essays clinging on to possibly studying in America with some of the brightest people in our generation. Perhaps applicants of our caliber are a dime-a-dozen in the competitive Ivy pool, but sometimes we never know what awaits us. We may just be lucky enough to find our applications at the right desk at the right time, read by the right officer.

Accustomed to all the bickering and satire on this website, I am humbled by the warm and kind reception I have received from you all.

Best of luck to y’all.

Best of luck to you too!

A lot of us are in the same boat (A Level Student from SA, a few friends of mine have gone to Oxbridge too).
Glad we have been able to offer some form of reassurance - if you can get through IB unscathed you should do just fine where ever you do end up :P
