expect black applications to fall at duke this year. you might be able to get in easier, if the same thing that happened at dartmouth happens at duke (163 black applicants out of 6,000+ in 2004, after the "ghetto party" incident).

My sat scores will only allow me to get a full tuition scholarship at Howard and Hampton. I want to retake it so I can get Tuition and Room and Board. Do they (HU and Hampton) still offer the same Scholarships during regular admission.

Which has the better pharmacy program.

PSATs are the easiest way to get full rides at a lot of schools as far as test scores count, but you CAN get full rides at a lot of HBCUs based on SATs, you just have to score a LOT higher ( like 1400, 1500-1600 range) and usually have a good GPA.

Y2K: you apply for the scholarship after you've been accepted, so yeah, as long as you submit the scholarship application before..i think...March. not sure, you can check their website though.

Y2K: I live right next to howard u, so I know a good amount about the school.
they have their own hospital, and the medical school is state-of-the-art which is REALLY cool....IF you're a medical major. The rest of the school isn't so nice. The medical school is really the only draw to howard. Also, if you can get in, Johns Hopkins would be excellent for you..

I can't really speak about Hampton, but i do know that a lot of the wealthier, (read: stuck up) black kids go there.

I am applying to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Rice, and NYU..

hahaha, i just found this thread and i would like to offer advice as a black female who just went through the college process.

first of all, regarding HBCU's:
I was deadset against attending an HBCU because I wanted more diversity than that (and I was under the impression that i would get a better education at other schools). So basically, I applied to Spelman to make my mom happy. I didn't know anything about it (except that it was all black and female) and I didn't really care to know anything about it. In all honesty, it was my biggest safety. I was positive I would get in, but I had no intention of going there. When i got my acceptance letter in mid-March, it came with a financial aid award of over $120,000 (a full scholarship and then some). So my parents made me visit and seriously consider the school. When i arrived on campus I learned that Spelman is considered very prestigious among african americans and white employers. The president of the school told me that the majority of african american female doctors attended Spelman or something like that. She also told me that many graduate schools view Spelman and Morehouse on equal footing as Harvard or Yale. So my argument that I could get a better education elsewhere was not entirely true (of course it is very likely that she only told me that so that i would attend her school). Besides that, I found that I really like the atmosphere of the school. the only major turnoffs (and i'm sure it is probably like this at every HBCU because of a general lack of funding) was that I didn't find the campus and dorm rooms to be that aesthetically appealing. But I'm a germophobe, so that was just my opinion.
Moral of the story: don't necessarily rule out an HBCU because of your perceived opinion of the school. Do some research, visit the campus, go to a meeting. You may be surprised.

Secondly, regarding Ivy league (or any Top 25 school) admissions:
I applied to 11 schools total. and out of those 11 schools, only 3 were not top 25/ivy league. and only one was not Top 100. I got into 10 of my 11 schools (accepted to Harvard, Columbia, Williams, Pomona, WashU, Northwestern, among others). After receiving my acceptances and deciding on Harvard, I received a lot of flack. Everyone said that the only reason i got into my schools was because I was black. Not knowing anything about me, they automatically assumed that I was less qualified than my white and asian counterparts who were rejected. I deal with it and move on, but this is a general warning to all of you. I hope that you are not presented with the same judgement, but if you are, just brush it off your shoulder. it's just jealousy and anger trying to manifest itself as logical and rational reasoning.

um, so good luck to all of you in the admissions process. i hope you all get into the school of your dreams.

if you have any questions you want answered about anything, you can just pm me.

By the way,
i'm not really sure about how true this is... i only have experience with spelman. but i know that due to their lack of funding, they only give full scholarships (aka the Presidential Scholarship) to 5 people: their top 5 applicants. I'm sure these applicants (as i was one of them) were National Achievement Finalists, but that status has no bearing on getting the scholarship. as a matter of fact, i didn't even tell spelman that I was a national merit finalist (i half-a$$ed the application). so i don't want Blueflame, or anyone else to get the wrong impression. that being said, i only have experience with spelman, so rhassani could very well be right.

but rhassani, your second point is accurate. i know that spelman gives scholarships based on GPA and test scores. if your scores are above a certain mark, you qualify for scholarships (although not necessarily a full ride).

ok. the post about what would happen if there was a thread called " all my white females " is a little stupid. Stop being so childish. The person who posted the thread simply wanted to connect with others who had a similar background as them & could relate to the college process as a black female. I go to a mostly asian school where there are many posts around school geared toward asians in which do not apply to me nor do I fit. However as long as people do not intentioanlly mean to offend or exclude me I am not hurt by this and understand that pple. from the same backgrounds can relate to each other on certain levels.

Thanks for the support AprilStewart! Some people can be really immature....
This is not some kind of black separatists thread! lol! We just want to connect with each other. I go to a predominately white school (magnet) and I just want to discuss college admissions with people like me.

THE LIST:
Boston U

edit: nevermind. it's not worth it.

Hahaha.... I wrote in this thread a year ago and now I'm a graduate...

Anyway... I ended up applying to Spelman and it was my first choice. I couldn't go though because WOW their finaid is bad.....

so i'm going to some random women's college in the midwest that i received a full ride from.

SPELMAN is such an amazing school... i wish i could afford to go there... but a 30K loan EVERY YEAR isn't worth it... well atleast not to my parents to cosign.

i advise every black girl to look into that school.

oh, posion, which school?

and isn't spelman amazing!!! i absolutely loved it and i constantly find myself regretting the decision to not go there.
