Good question, yes, any comments on diversity?

@crepes and @Tookme10mins

RPI’s Diversity Stats can be found here: http://www.rpi.edu/about/heoa/RPI_HEOA_Student_Diversity_2013.JPG

Thanks

Thanks @absotootly for providing that link.

If you’re a different race and feel like you’re gonna be a minority, RPI has a ton of cultural clubs you can join. Asians can join the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE). Hispanics have Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Those are more professional organizations. There are also more cultural ones as well.

What were your stats when apply to this school ? SAT etc I want to come here but I only have a 1910 sat

Oh, wow, this was such a long time ago. Um.

SAT: 2230
GPA: 3.5ish

I took all AP classes senior year and 1 AP class junior year. Had some volunteering, not so much leadership though. But I was in a few clubs here and there. I think I got in partially because I’m a girl too.

Do good on your essay.

Does having a relative as a professor work in your favor?

Most likely, yes. It’s all about those connections. Plus, whatever you have obviously.

Why is the 4 year graduation rate so low? Is it because most of the classes are hard?
Can students live in dorms all 4 years? Are there enough dorm rooms for students?
For students who have cars, how’s the parking? Enough space for everyone?

Thank you so much for answering!

There are a few reasons that come to mind. First, yes, classes are hard. I have had a few courses where a lot of students found the material hard and got bad enough grades that they decided to drop the class and take it again some other time. This would lead to them not getting enough credits to graduate on time and thus, pushing them back. The courses I can think of are FOCS, and Data Structures, both CS courses. Another typical reason for late graduation is the co-ops that so many students get. I know A LOT of people who are on co-ops and because of that, they are pushed back a semester for graduating. This is one of the good reasons, haha. It’s great to know that there is a lot of opportunities for students to get co-ops.

First and second year students are required to live in dorms. Junior and seniors can live in dorms if they want to. You’d have to enter a lottery though because there are only a number of spaces on campus. But most upperclassmen live off campus because it’s so much cheaper.

Freshmen technically aren’t allowed to have cars, so if you have a car as a freshmen, you have to try and find street parking where it’s allowed and where it’s free. There are a couple places around campus but kinda few. After that, you can have cars, but you’d have to get a parking permit ($125) in order to park in the spaces around dorm rooms.

How’s RPI’s financial aid? Can you share how much financial aid you received? Or how much financial aid other people have received?
Thanks. :)

RPI’s financial aid is pretty good from what I hear from my friends and from myself as well. A lot of people would actually have gone to a different school but RPI gave them a lot more money to come here. I got a half-ride so that impacted my decision to come here as well. I also came here because of the atmosphere, the grass, and I felt that I fit.

RPI offers a fair amount of merit money, which is great for people who make too much for financial aid, but can’t afford full-pay at over 60K per year.

Son applied early to RPI, wish him luck!

Merit aid estimate from NPC is pretty good, so he’ll need to take loans but not too much.

He applied EA to two schools, but their FA estimate is much lower than RPI, another reason RPI is his top choice.

He also has a friend there, and I have a close friend who went there, really smart chemical engineer.

Good luck to your son. My son is very happy there. It’s a tough school, meaning classes are hard, and there certainly isn’t grade inflation, but it’s been a great experience for my son so far.

Thank you, he likes difficult classes, and he is SO looking forward to college where he can focus on four or five classes at a time and have flexible scheduling.

@1214mom, have you guys been to Dinosaur BBQ? It’s almost adjacent to the campus. Very good (apologies if you are vegan )

Yes we have. We also like Browns (or something with brown in the name). But I think my favorite place may be ilium cafe, or something close to that. Big apple pizza is quite popular with students, judging from my sons credit card statement.

@1214mom - It’s Brown’s Brewing Company. We always liked it, too.

@rhandco - Good luck to your son!!

Posted on another thread, but it seems inactive to me, so i’m going to repeat it here. It doesn’t matter if the writing supplement is still pending, right? I didn’t feel the need to upload a resume, but the yellow circle is quite an annoyance.

@dadinator, thank you!

@maniactango, I was wondering too. My son would only upload pretty much the activities he had, and anything “extra” was in his essay.
