I recently sat down with my counselor to discuss my courses for next year. Due to the fact that my school district is so rigid about it's course policies, and the fact that my grades from last year were less than stellar, I will be having to take all "regular" or "core" classes and I won't be able to take honors.... Here is my current schedule:

English 9
World Geography/Health
General Science
Algebra 1
Spanish 1 (zero period/possibly)
Psychology II (possibly)
You and the Law (possibly)

I'm really upset that I won't be able to take any honors classes this year.... Do you think that my current schedule will hender my chances of getting into a good liberal arts college? Thanks in advance!

Not at all. Regular courses are easier than honors courses, which means less work. Get all "A"s in your classes, and use the free time to self-study some APs (Psychology, perhaps), or to really go in-depth on extracurriculars that you enjoy. With your new grades, you’ll be able to get into honors courses next year AND have a really solid base for ECs later on.

Thank you! Hopefully, I’ll be able to take Psychology II and You and the Law this year. That way, I can take AP Psychology and International Relations next year! Also, should I take Spanish (zero period) or French? If I take French, I can’t take Psych and YAL… But I think French may be more useful…

Also, do you think it’s bad that I’m taking Algebra and General Science, instead of Geometry and Biology? I’ve already taken Algebra, but I didn’t pass the test to take Geo. And I have all my credits for Biology, but I have to be concruently enrolled in Geo. Therefore, I can’t take the class.

That depends on whether or not you like waking up early, haha. Which is more important to you: taking French, or Psych and YAL? I’d go with the language that has the best teacher(s).

That’s easy; take Geometry next summer at community college, or through your school district, if it’s offered (you need to talk to your guidance counselor for more in-depth information, though). Can you take Chemistry instead of Bio (I doubt they’ll double count your credit), or another class? If possible, you could take Algebra and Geometry in the same year, and not do a science, and then do a science at community college/summer school.

I had a similar situation with regards to math. I took Algebra I in 8th grade but my school had decided to make me retake the class. So, I’m doubling up in math freshman year by taking Honors Algebra I and geometry. This way I can take biology as well.

Smorgasbord gave you good advice. Try to see if your school will let you take algebra I and geometry at the same time. If not, you’ll most likely have to take summer classes. Like the above posters said, use your free time to your advantage. Good luck!
