So I'm only gonna be a sophomore, but my parents are like the typical asian parents and are making me look at the Ivies. I've been on all the tours, but I'm liking Yale the best cuz it's just beautiful and I love the residential colleges. But do you think I'll have a chance of getting in? Keep in mind I'm not even a sophomore yet.

please tell me what I should do in the next few years to get into Yale. Thanks :)

OK. First thing. You need to stop worrying about college and be a child. Enjoy it while it lasts. Take every opportunity that presents itself to you. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - mistakes shape who you are. Work hard. Play harder.

Second. Yale has over 20,000 applicants. You have great stats, but so do the other 20,000 odd people applying. No matter how much anyone on these forums pretend to know about admissions (bar adcoms, that is) NOBODY is qualified to give you an adequate “chance” on your admissions status to Yale. Telling people that they’re definitely going to be accepted can instill false hope in a very dicey statistical game. Alternately, telling anyone there’s no chance of acceptance does the opposite and can turn people off the idea of applying to their dream school. So please, PLEASE - take everything said to you here with a very large pinch of salt.

Thirdly. Do not do anything unless you want to. There are so many people with the classic “laundry list” of extra-curriculars, who take up extra activities they don’t really care about just so it’ll look good on a college application. Don’t fit yourself to a college. When the time is right, you’ll find the college to fit YOU. Love who you are and let that shine through on your application.

Fourthly. You’re not a sophomore, so you’re like what, 15/16 years old? Get off this darned forum and live your life.

Do ECs you like, get a 4.0 UW, score well on your tests (retake SAT), write good essays on your application, and stop worrying about acceptances until the summer after your junior year.
