It seems like many science/math people (RSI, NASA SHARP, OYMPIAD WINNERS< US PHYSICS TEAMS< SIEMENS<) were deferred...BUT WHY?

Any Thoughts?

USAMO here deferred. it's common at Harvard...

I put down my probable major as chemistry, and I got in, so I don't really know.

I meant people who initially won olympiads and other science competitions did not get in EA. All the NASA SHARP, RSI, SIEMENS, ISEF, winners I know got deferred.

wait who from RSI was deferred?

i count at least five deferred.

how many from RSI applied?

Mhmm, I know a bunch of those kids, and lots of deferrals.
I got in with CS as prospective major, so who knows...

clearly harvard doesn't like talented math or science students!

correlation != causation. i was on the us physics team, and i was deferred, but i don't think crimson2011's observation is indicative of a general trend. so chillax, folks.

I put down biochem and I got in...

I a not talking about what you put down...I am talking about if you won any big competitions and were deferred.

there's a lot of those math/science awards out there so maybe Harvard can easily fill its quota? who knows.

Oh hmm. I actually got rejected from RSI but I did two years of research at MIT...

did any siemens people get in?

I got deferred and yes my major was chem or biochem

I got accepted with Biochem concentration.

you are no longer nervous... lol

i got siemens and i got in, but i also do a bunch of other stuff...
well, good luck in april!

A sudden discovery:
Does anybody think that "87 math concentrators" is a little weird? Of all 875 admits, 10% are math major (Harvard is really a big school that has tons of other majors)? I dare say almost no university has such a big portion of math majors...Even MIT has only 8%, which has a larger math school than Harvard.
I am afraid that there were 87 applied for math major.
