All University of Michigan frat events canceled over claims of sex assault and hazing

Why does it feel like these stories just happen over and over again?

On Thursday night, the Interfraternity Council suspended all social activities for fraternities at the U of Michigan. The claims of sexual assault and hazing included:

From the Detroit Free Press: http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2017/11/10/university-of-michigan-fraternity-sexual-assault-hazing/851402001/
And the Michigan Daily, the student-run paper that broke the story: https://www.michigandaily.com/section/campus-life/interfraternity-council-suspends-all-fraternity-social-activity-midst-hazing

I agree with this suspension. Seems like a lot of bad behavior among the fraternities. I also noticed that the sororities (who apparently were not part of this) were not suspended. I also agree with that.

Because they do keep happening over and over again…

This suspension was not issued by the university but by IFC, Interfraternity Council, which is the oversight for certain social fraternities, not sororities or other fraternities.

^ Thanks. I re-read that. It makes sense to me.

However, at Michigan, social events at all 27 fraternities have been shut down. No sororities are affected.

Note that there are more than 27 social fraternities at Michigan. The count of 27 would be those in the IFC. There are 4 in the MCGC and 4 in the NPHC, which makes the total 35.

The news articles do not seem to say anything about the MCGC, NPHC, or the 8 fraternities associated with those umbrella groups.

All that hazing, all those arrests, and UMich lost the game to MSU. A really bad, no good weekend.

@intparent beat me to it.

I haven’t heard about this from my students. I know I have a few frat brothers. Wonder if it’ll be a topic of conversation next week.

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2017/11/10/university-michigan-fraternities-suspension/107541260/ says that:

… and there is no mention of any similar action by the MCGC or NHPC with respect to the 8 fraternity chapters that they have under them.
