All you computer wizards, I have a question for you.

I have a DELL Inspiron 1420 and I got it in January 2008 and I'm having problems. It is no longer under warranty.

A few months ago, my power cord stopped working, so I replaced it and everything was fine. Now, my laptop won't charge and by the battery icon it says "plugged in, not charging". I just bought a brand new battery for my laptop, and it STILL displays the same message, and will not charge.

What do I do?

I think it has something to do with the power cord/adapter, not the battery. When it happened to me occasionally, it was caused by not enough wattage being supplied to the computer. I’d perhaps get a new power cord, although I would ask Dell first.

break out the sledge hammer

Well when I called DELL, they told me to look at my power adapter to see if there was a green light on, and there was. So, they told me that wasn’t the problem and that I needed to get a new battery-and that didn’t work.

Just because the green light’s on, doesn’t mean that it’s supplying enough wattage; it just means it’s supplying something. My light was still green on the adapter when I got the warning.

I’d take Dell’s technical support with a grain of salt. Sometimes, you get a good person, but sometimes you get some random idiot. Last time, they told me to flash my BIOS to get my speakers working. >_>
