Allowed to Take Upper Div Class as a Freshman?

So I was wondering if, as a freshman, I would be able to take upper division classes? Specifically Legal Studies 161. I asked the legal studies advisor, and she said freshman shouldn't take upper divisions since they want students to have a year of experience before doing that. But then I asked some other students and they said I should just take it and that it would be fine. I'm not worried about doing the work or whatever, just wondering if I can "legally" take them as a freshman?

“Legally” yes, you can take upper divisions in general. I took Soc 150 this semester and next semester I’m doing another upper div class, ESPM 114… So it’s definitely allowed, but you should email the professor to get an answer about his or her class specifically.

In general, as long as you meet the pre-requisites for the course, you can take an upper division course as a freshman or sophomore. For a specific course, check the listed pre-requisites and/or the instructor.

can you start taking upper divs for your major? i took an upper div for a breadth and it was completely fine. it was easier than my lower divs. there were only 3 tests, and 3 papers. no final. thankkk goddd

There are no prereqs for the class. In the email from the advisor, she said, " My best advice is to plan on taking LS 161 in a future semester when you are a sophomore. Legal Studies courses are reserved for sophomores, juniors and seniors." Is legal studies different from other departments in that only sophomores and above can take the classes?

anyone? 10char

As a LS major, I can tell you that the only reason that they do that is to allow LS majors to get into the class.
