So my 26th birthday is in the next couple of days and I am freaking out because I can't double check and make sure I am registered with Selective Service because their whole system is down. They can't tell me over the phone or online. However; I understand you have to be registered for Selective Service to receive Federal Financial Aid. Am I correct in assuming that if I have received Financial Aid from the Federal Government then I am definitely registered with Selective Service?

Or, is it possible that they just took me at my word when I said I was registered with Selective Service on all my FAFSA forms? Don't get me wrong, I answered them all honestly and I fully believe I am registered; it just worries me because I would like to work for the Federal Government someday and if I don't register I can't ever do that.

Surely there system won’t be down for days…but, yes, you’re likely registered already if you’ve received federal aid. Don’t you have your Selective Service Registration card?

No, I didn’t hold onto my card. I couldn’t have cared less when I originally registered. Their system has been down for almost a week. I even got in contact with headquarters in Arlington VA today and they said they can’t even access their database to tell me if I’m registered.

Well, if you remember ever HAVING a card, then you’re certainly registered. I thought the card came with instructions to keep it in a safe place…

Their online system to register is down as well, otherwise I would just use that. I did just complete my FAFSA for 2011 and marked the box that said “Register Me” just incase. I’m not sure when that counts as being registered though, it might not try to register me until after my birthday.

The belief is just based on my assumption that I sent in the registration after receiving the shaving cream and razor, I remember getting those.

Yes I believe this is true. In fact, I don’t think your FAFSA will even be processed if you aren’t registered…I could be wrong about that…someone here will verify.

I distinctly remember receiving the shaving cream because it was a good brand and all I had previously used was crappy stuff. I don’t, however, remember sending in the registration form. I’m not saying I remember not sending it in, I just don’t remember sending it in.

On a side note, I’ve reviewed the ISIR guide and it appears that the CPS wouldn’t let them give me the financial aid if Selective Service hadn’t confirmed that I was registered. It would be great to hear someone confirm that, but as of right now I’m feeling pretty good about it.

Selective Service’s website has been down for several days. I have been trying to access a registration for a student so I can award his aid.

Your FAFSA will be processed but you will not be able to receive aid if you have not registered for the SS. The processor will flag your FAFSA and the school will be unable to disburse any aid to you until you prove to them that you are registered.

At this point, I think you have done what you can do … you may well be registered (you don’t know that you are not …), and you did indicate that you want to be registered when you completed your FAFSA (just in case you are not). If things get messed up and you did not get registered … you can cross that bridge when you come to it.

I’m a graduate student right now and I have been receiving Federal aid for school, with no problems, since 2007. I must be registered for that to be the case, correct? Otherwise wouldn’t my current and previous school have held back on disbursing the aid until I 1) register or 2) prove I have registered?

If what you are saying is correct, you must be registered. When you do the FAFSA, your name is checked against the SS files. If you should have been registered & were not, there would have been a flag.
