I'm from Alabama, 3.2 GPA and 170/315 in class (ugh), highly competitive public school, rigorous course load (11 AP/honors classes in 4 years), 30 ACT, I've been told my Common App essay is excellent, recs should be solid, good writing-focused ECs.

Here is my almost-finalized list:

Emerson College (#1 choice)
Fordham U
Ithaca
Hampshire
Clark
Guilford
Warren Wilson
Northeastern
Manhattanville
Eugene Lang

Any recommendations are appreciated. I'm looking for places with good English/journalism programs as I want to be a writer. Thanks.

I'd agree, too. A nice mix of reachy, match, and safe schools. Your high ACTs should help make clear that you really do come from a competitive HS. Good luck!!

Snow is overrated.
In my holy opinion, of course.

The farthest north school I'm applying to is in ny, but it's surrounded by water so it never really gets below 0F (the next farthest is Baltimore).

Just looked up Emerson, and it seems like a great school (minus the whole Boston part, of course; but having family from ny who despise the red sox does that a person)- anyway, good luck with your applications.

It is a great school for what I'm looking to study. It doesn't hurt that I'm totally in love with the "campus," or lack thereof. I do love Boston though; while NYC is my favorite city in the world (I grew up on Woody Allen movies), I'm not sure I could go to college there--too overwhelming. Boston feels perfect to me. It's a beautiful city.
Good luck in your apps too :)

I read once that during the school year, 25% of all Bostonians are college students. It's a great college "town" ---or city. S is in his 3rd year at BU, grew up in California and LOVES Boston.

Wow, that's impressive. I spent 2 weeks at BU this summer for a high schooler program. I wasn't a fan of the people and we stayed in the crappy freshman dorms, but I totally fell in love with Boston. Newbury Street might be my single favorite street on the planet. The city is so ethereal and nurturing, but at the same time it is very much a city; it still moves at a blistering pace, it still eats people alive, but not in the same context as NYC if you know what I'm saying. It isn't as unforgiving.

Bennington? It's not in a city at all, but it puts out many good writers and again, a male from Alabama would have a real edge!
Definitely has snow!
