Almost no one here can tell you your chances

Since most of us are not on an adcom, most of us can not tell you whether you will get in or not. By saying you will, and then you won't, we will have done a great dis-service to you, by saying you won't and you probably will have, we could have deterred you from your dream school. Yes, I do know this is the whay are my chances section, but really, is anyone here really qualifed to tell you you made it to Harvard, or Princeton, or even a state school. There are so many other factors. Instead I have enjoyed the non-chances discussions like is ED better than RD, that was so good, if you haven't read it yet. Let's try to get more of those posts up here, they can benefit you more than giving you false hopes.

I think most of us understand that CC'ers aren't qualified to evaluate "chances".The ones who are asking what their chances are to certain colleges just want to get some feedback, especially from a person who has already been admitted to that specific college.

Rarely... I mean rarely do u find people who have already been admitted giving advice on their own schools. In fact, how would an admitted student know your chances?

He does not know why he got admitted. A kid with a 1600 might have gotten in because of a killer essay or another 1600 kid could have gotten in inspite of his essays. They don't give admitted students a handbook, explaining why they were accepted and others were rejected.

So... STOP ASKING YOUR CHANCES.

lol calm down

you calm down

There's a difference between evaluating someone that is among the average applicants, stats wise, and telling someone it's not worth an application fee. A student with an 1100 SAT and a top 50% class rank has little chance at the top schools in the country, unless he or she has some other mitigating circumstance (a pro tennis player, a football star, a world class cello player, etc).

My personal pet peeve is when stupid CC posters start posting %s that are completely arbitrary, if not many times misguided and flat our misrepresentative.

I think that anyone who posts in “what are my chances” threads know that all feedback are pretty much opinions- I mean, if they’re posting on a friggen college board they should be smart enough to know that- so LAY OFF….i mean, as miamigrl said: calm down—they just want a little outlook and some opinions

psquared, the people that post here, don't really know what a college wants. no where are they given information.

do they realize that some of the information may be wrong? you're looking at the some of the top1% in the country that post here. no where am i near one of them , but if i have the common sense to know that some of the information here is false, i'm sure, that the geniuses of the modern world would be able to come to this conclusion also.

It's true, people tell you you have a 50% chance of getting in, but what the heck does that mean? It's not like the admissions officers read your app then flip a coin to decide whether or not to accept you. At least I hope it's not like that :)

I was at a course, and one of the MIT admissions officer, said she watched a Patriots Game, she decided that when she saw the Patriots make a successful touchdown, she would let the person in.

Now, if she was exagerrating, I don't know. But honestly, that sucks. You have your whole life, on the mood on one admission officer.

If you have a problem with this board, then don't friggin' go on the CHANCES board!! Geez!

I never say,"well since I know everything there is to know about college admissions, I can tell you without a doubt that you will get accepted/rejected to College X."

I simply indicate what some of the stats are of admitted students, and tell the student is a match/reach. If someone for instance with a 1300 SAT and a 3.8 GPA ranked in the top 10% of their class wanted to know what their chances were for Boston University, I would say that it is a match/slight reach, etc. If this person was applying there as a safety, for instance, I could indicate that although he/she has a good chance, it's not a safety, so pick some more schools.

The Chances board is not intended to be a definite prediction for college admissions. It simply serves to offer free and anonymous feedback for others while offering friendly suggestions of other schools.

And people every year with low stats get into ivies and elite universities. It is simply too hard to predict with perfect accuracy. But, with a little common sense and general knowledge, we can help applicants take the best route through this tortuous and emotional journey.

Yes, for those of you who say to not ask for chances..erm, that's the whole point of this board. It's called, "What are my chances?" So..STOP SAYING STOP ASKING YOUR CHANCES. :)

I feel that the case of match or reach type evaluations are beneficial, its the posts where people say you are definately in or definately out, or even give percentages which I feel may be worse than not posting at all, b/c as I said before they may give false hopes, but when you do match or reach, thats a little better at least, at least this discussion accomplished what i hoped it would, allow the readers of this to know that if and when they post their stats, to take it with a grain of salt, b/c if someone tells you you are in, that might not be the case, and if someone tells you you are out, that might not be the case, thanks for contributing to the discussion

psquared, I couldn't agree more.
