Basically, are the honor societies for first years worth joining? Any benefits aside from making your wallet thinner? Thanks.

I don't know .. I might consider joining

I joined alpha lambda delta/phi eta sigma my first year and i would only recommed it if you intend to become involved in the organization.

They (ald/pes) don't seem to have much that you can get involved in. I tried emailing them in the past about what exactly they do, but never got a response. I signed up for their mailing list, and it's been a year now and I've only received one email about one single service event. Either their publicity person isn't doing what he/she is supposed to do, or this is about all they do.

Is this membership good only for ur freshman year. How about soph year? Is this reflected in the transcript? Don't anythink that this good for a resume?

Each U (that has a chapter) decides on what activities (if any) to conduct. I believe the only mandatory activity is the initiation (basically a formal ceremony). The chapters of ALD & PES at the University of Hawaii in the mid-70s had social activities that I enjoyed, including a trip to the island of Maui. I enjoyed the groups very much and only stopped participating when I transferred to another U. When I got to that U, I helped reactivate their dormant chapters of both honor societies. Your membership is a lifetime membership and I always listed it on my resumes, as they are national honor societies.
Your U should be able to provide info about what their chapter of ALD/PES does. If the chapter isn't doing much, it's an opportunity for you to step in & get things going, if you'd like.
