Already Accepted into Georgetown, Curious about Ivy Chances

Hey, guys - first time poster here, so go easy on me.

I've been accepted into Georgetown EA, but I'm still applying to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, UPenn, Cornell, and Duke, just to see where I might get in. I'd appreciate any comments on my chances for any of these schools.

Intended Major:
-Political Science/Government

I've been to dozens of political events and rallies, and I attached a sheet of pictures to my applications of me with Kerry, Gore, Lieberman, Edwards (democrats), and also Newt Gingrich and Arlen Specter (republicans).

I think my major strength is just being well-rounded, but I'd like to hear what anyone thinks. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

you were with those political people in a picture?

how'd you manage that?

I met each politican under separate circumstances, but, basically, I went to a ton of rallies/town halls with VIP passes, brought my camera, and got my picture with each of them.

first off, congrats on georgetown...i think you have as good a shot as anyone on CC, maybe better...duke, upenn, and cornell are more likely for you to get into, but you have decent chances at the others also, im really not sure...

photoshop :D

any comments would be greatly appreciated!

I would have to see your AP scores to comment.

No AP Tests taken - I took all honors as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. I'm taking 4 APs this year, straight As so far.

As long as your essays stand out, you have as good a chance as anyone (at least at Cornell, Penn and Duke). The political thing might be a nice hook, but you can never tell.

what georgetown school did you get into?

I was accepted into the college, though, in hindsight, I probably should've applied to the Foreign Service school because of its incredible foreign studies program.

I really stressed the Boy Scouts in my essays. I wrote my common app personal statement about how preparing for a vigorous hiking trip in New Mexico (I'm from PA)last summer shaped me into a leader - I think it's pretty good.

"I would have to see your AP scores to comment."

I find it hard to fathom why so many people think that AP scores are important in admissions--they're really not.

Anyway, MJS, I think you should feel pretty confident about the ivies to which you applied; by no means are you a lock, but you're surely a competitive applicant. Good luck!

Very nice stats but why no APs in previous years? That might affect you with some of the Ivies - or maybe you've got a good reason? Cornell would probably still be okay with those 4 APs only. Harvard, U Penn, Yale, and those schools...I doubt. Duke, maybe.

you have a good shot, especially if you showed an interest in politics.

If you have taken AP classes before, you should have made an effort to take the tests, but if you didn't have AP classes, I wouldn't worry about it.

Whats your rank about - top 5%?

Go to Georgetown. It's a great school, and it seems like you would like it there more. It's also in a great part of the city for college kids. I think that you can't go wrong. Like many others, don't be blinded by rankings. Ranking is almost the only difference between Georgetown and Harvard.
Good Luck.
-AMG

harvard is a name...seriously, thats all it is...you will get as good an education at georgetown, maybe even better, plus DC is amazing...i agree with AMG345, go to georgetown

Thanks for all your responses, guys. They really mean a lot to me, we don't talk about this among friends at my school.

My lack of APs before this year does have an explanation - the only APs available to juniors at my high-school (the top public high school in PA, top-20 in the US) are in the science department, which isn't my intended field of pursuit (though I've gotten straight As in honors science courses, and I'm getting an A in AP Environmental Science).

I'm not sure about my precise rank, but it's definitely top 10%, possibly top 5%. My high school, as I said, is tops in the state and highly competitive: in my class, 11 were accepted into Penn ED, 3 into Duke, 1 Harvard, and 11 Yalees were deferred.

I have been torn about Georgetown vs. the Ivy League, especially because I want to go into politics. I'll have to see exactly where I get in, then I'll have to make some tough choices. I'd definitely pick Harvard/Yale/Princeton over Georgetown, but Penn/Cornell/Duke v. Georgetown would be a much harder choice to make. At this point, I'm happy to be in Georgetown, but still anxious about regular decisions.

about ten of my fraternity brothers got into cornell and georgetown and chose cornell...id probably go ivy over georgetown...there is something about being at an ivy that is amazing..you just can't explain it.
