I have 5 AP tests to take this year though, and though I've heard materials chem is "the most awesome class ever", I really need a study hall so I can harass my teachers with AP questions---yes, I will miss making rock candy and silly putty, and spending time with one of my favorite teachers, but really, the issue is... will JHU frown upon this? I mean... it's more of a fun class than a legit class and I've already taken AP chem...

(I've been thinking about doing this since before the decisions came out, and I realize that it's necessary to inform the admissions office if I do decide to take the study hall.)

If you’re worried about how it would look to JHU then take the class. You’re already accepted and it would take a lot to change that - Hopkins just wants to see you keep on trying through second semester of your senior year. If you’re worried about your performance on the APs then maybe you should take the extra study time, purely because if you do well it on them and can use them for credits it will make your time at Hopkins a bit easier. It might even look worse to Hopkins to drop the class, if you want to over analyze it. They won’t know that Materials Chem is so easy, and they won’t know your intentions for the study hall - it could be interpreted as dropping a class to slack off and sit around, a telltale sign of senioritis!! I say…the class seems fun…take it and enjoy it!!

Why don’t you contact the admissions counselor at Hopkins and ask them what they think? My son wanted to drop a class second semester senior year (French 6), e-mailed the school, gave his reasons, and they had no problem with it.
