Already transferred from Colgate to Penn, onward to BROWN?

Okay, some of you might remember me from last year. I transferred from Colgate U. to Penn. Brown was (always has been) my first choice, but they rejected me. Maybe I should have stayed another year at Colgate and tried again next season, but I couldn't spend another day at that middle of nowhere/frat hell school! So, I came to Penn, but just days into classes I LOATHE my gen. ed classes and am convinced I could do a MUCH better job of crafting a lib. arts education myself if I was at Brown. Penn at night scares me, but I've walked around Brown alone at 3am plenty without fear. I'm an anthro major, and its way easier to get involved w/Haffenreffer museum than with Penn's anthro etc....+ all the pre-professionalism here is already old. In short, I have and do really want to go to Brown. Do you think I have a shot this year, or will I look like a malcontent??

SAT: 3340 (800v, 790w, 750 m)
SAT II: Lit: 800, french w/l : 620 (8th grade)
HS gpa: 3.6ish 4+w
Colgate GPA: 3.84
I'lll probably do well here...

sry to be annoying, but i'm fairly positive your sats are 2340. congrats on transferring to penn. even if you're unatisified, it's still a wonderful accomplishment. also, what is the harm in putting in 1 application to brown? nothing, except your time and the application fee. just make sure you don't get too caught up in hating/being unhappy at penn.

Thanks mememe245, you're right I did get a 2340!! Any other thoughts?

I can't be of much help, but I do know Brown appears to have a very bad transfer acceptance rate.

Total number of transfer students who applied: 1,085

Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 33

It still doesn't hurt to try if you're confident enough.

University Park? What's wrong with it? Just curious.

You're right to worry that you might look like a malcontent. Penn has lots of happy supporters on this board; you were accepted there, so it shouldn't be that bad a fit. One mistake (Colgate) is easy to forgive; now you've used up your free pass.
Just how many loathsome Gen Ed. classes do you have to suffer through? Can't you find some liberal arts lovers in the English or History departments? In theory, you could take some of your classes at other colleges in the area.

ummmm University Park is Penn State

wow this is CC i didnt think we would have people confusing UPenn and PSU around here

Yea, we're "University City"..it's safe I guess, just not Providence

dude.. man up!

penn isn't bad at all if you walk late at night. if you're walking westward past the mid-40's, that's totally different.

anyway, one important thing you left out was your college gpa at penn. i think you'll have a shot if you can clearly state your reasons for leaving penn. and let's just say, they better be AMAZING.

Providence is not that safe either. Applying to Brown might make you appear to look indecisive to its adcom, especially since Colgate and Penn are somewhat different than the Brown experience. That being said, if it makes you feel better, then apply to Brown. Just be sure that you're not missing the good stuff at Penn while you're dreaming of the other Ivy.

I know they won't admit this, but seeing that you applied more than once couldn't hurt either... At least they'll see that you are extremely passionate about getting in.

I dont think anyone here is being helpful.

I am somewhat in the same position as you. I was at a CC and now at ucla, and i am contemplating transfer to a smaller private school.

The question here is not whether you will get in, because i think your stats are good. The question here is whether you qualify to transfer or not.

In order to know this, you have to tell us how many units you have completed and how many are in progress. After 64-80 units, some schools wont accept you (depending on the school).

Are you willing to graduate late?

I'm not worried about losing credits, as long as I can transfer 16, I'm good.

that was half of the issue i was trying to weight in. The other half asks how many units do you have? having too many could mean a rejection.

I'll have 22 at then end of my soph. year, but do you really think that might==rejection?? I'd be happy to spend a full 2 years at Brown...I could just transfer 16 (as many in my major as possible)...

IMO, and it is just one opinion, you will, in fact, look like a malcontent or someone who is careless in selecting a school. The things you dislike about Penn are largely things you could have easily known in advance (pre-professionalism rep, location issues wrt safety). Why did you go there?

You could readily address some of your other concerns: "easier" to get involved with Haffenreffer than with Penn's anthro? Who promised you easier? Do the work to bloom where you are planted. Instead of deciding you are dissatisfied after a sum total of 30+ days at the place. Craft a better liberal arts education at Brown? Craft a great one at Penn, where you are.

Brown was always your first choice. At some point, we all need to learn to let go when life sends us in a different direction. We don't always get our first choices. One could argue that the happiest most successful people in life are those who learn to make the most out of what happens to them, not those who always get their first wish.

Sure, it is a good trait to not give up on something important and to persist in going after what you want. What strikes me is that you don't even allow the time and make the effort to accomplish what you want where you are.

This has been a harsh post, I know. A kind of tough love. I don't do it to discourage you; I do it to tell you how you might look to some reviewers. Because that is what you asked. And to have you really take the time to look at your own thought processes here. Spending energy after such a short time at a new school on looking backwards at what might have been; on how much better some unknown alternative might be.... Not a good thing.

Bloom where you are planted.

I am 9.46x10^12 happier at Penn than I was at Colgate...I knew Penn wasn't perfect, but I HAD to get out of Colgate and Penn accepted me while Brown & Chicago rejected me. I'm not saying I hate it here or that I'm not getting a phenomenal education, just that I still really want to go to Brown and would appreciate any advice on how to appear less indecisive (as I've been "decided" on Brown for awhile, just unable to attend because of its adcom). Thanks!

yeah, u qualify for transfer, but i am not sure about how it will look that u completed not so much units per school.

I think u should apply just to see what happens...and if u get in, then go.

Thanks for all the posts....I stuck it out two weeks and now I'm tickled Red & Blue here....Still, I may apply just for the heck of it; I'd regret not trying--I think the CC ethos of "If Harvard doesn't SAY they don't take 2x transfers your foolish not to apply a 4th time has rubbed off" Not that I want to apply there, etc.

Do y'all think if I can pull decent grades, that I might have a shot??

Honestly, TerrarumOrbis...

I understand your dilemma. I just transfered to UGA from Morehouse College, but I would NEVER consider transferring ANYWHERE else, regardless of how much I hated UGA... for the same reasons as described by Andale.

Andale spent a lot of time typing several paragraphs for you, and you pretty much didn't listen to a word he/she said. Andale was ONEHUNDRED percent right... read that post over again... and OVER AGAIN.

Honestly.. you will look very indecisive to nearly everyone. Whatever you do, don't transfer again. Make the best of your current situation.

By the way, I'm from Philadelphia too. And coming from Germantown Friends School in Germantown, I could have easily went to UPenn, but having done my research beforehand, I knew that the school (however good it is/was) was not for me due to it's location (North Philly). It's located right in the hood.. anyone can see that. I'm surprised with your superior SAT/ SATII/ GPA that you couldn't research that small piece of information.

I say this not to grill you, but to TEACH you something. Do your damn research next time.
