Alright, call this a dumb question but...

I am President of my school's Republican Club. I am not a far-right religious Bush-loving racist, but I am also from Ohio and I know that people's imaginations run wild when they hear the word republican. We are a club that supports political harmony and friendly debate, and in an effort to promote this, I formed an alliance with the Young Democrats at my school called the Politically Active Student Association.

How should I convey this on my Dartmouth app? I don't want to come across as a close-minded far-right nutcase, but on the other hand, it is an important activity to me and I have put a lot of time into it. Many people have told me to leave it off my app completely because it would give the wrong impression but I would like to avoid that if possible!

You just answered your own question. On your app just put: “We are a club that supports political harmony and friendly debate, and in an effort to promote this, I formed an alliance with the Young Democrats at my school called the Politically Active Student Association.”

…and then expand upon it a bit.

Dartmouth has a very active College Republicans club. They organize an annual NH College Republicans convention, and hosted John McCain when he ran for president.

Maybe you can speak about how you’re interested in continuing w/ your interests at Dartmouth, and how you hope to contribute.

I agree with coureur.

You will not come across as a “close-minded far-right nutcase.” Goodness. I’m a Democrat, yet I know not all Republicans are idiots.

Misguided, perhaps, but not idiots. ;)
