Alright, I give up - I can't hold it in anymore!

I've told myself that I'm NOT making a chances thread - but I couldn't :(

I'm hearing back from Caltech tomorrow, and from MIT on Saturday.

Indian Male, CA, Competitive Public (like #3-4 in CA)

ACADEMICS

SAT: 2310 (M:780 W:800 CR:730 E: 8 lol )
SAT II: 770 Math 2, 740 USH, 730 Biology M
ACT: Composite = 34: 35 math, 34's everything else.

GPA: 3.67 UW. Approximately 4.24 W
Toughest courseload possible though... my current schedule:

AP Physics C
AP English Lit.
AP Chemistry
AP Gov./Econ.
Sociology
AP Statistics

10 AP's by the time High School's finished...

AP's: So far: Euro (4), US History (5), Bio (5) and Calc. AB (5)

School doesn't rank, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the top 10%

Recommendations: Both my Math and History teachers have asked me to come to them, and they've written awesome recs. My spanish teacher is also writing my early rec's, and I've heard that she's very, very eloquent on recs - and she loves me :)
**
Essay**: Personally, I think it's awesome...one's about my favorite teacher/biggest influence, and the other's about toothpaste + me moving around and stuff - MIT topic.

Awards and Honors

Ranked in the top 65 in the Nation (my age group) in Chess.
Won a couple of state awards, couple of national awards, etc.
National 'A' Level ranking in the US Chess Federation.

99th Percentile PSAT: Commended, I didn't get Semi-Finalist since my score wasn't high enough (mine --> 215, while the CA cutoff was 217).

Qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (Yep. I got a 3, and I'm proud of it!)

IEC (Industry Education Council) outstanding educational achievement award given for exemplary participation in a Business 21st Century Institute.

EXTRACURRICULARS

Captain of the La Ca

Alrite, come on people! bump

I don't think you have much to worry about.

The Ivies will always be reaches for people, but your stats, grades, and activities sound solid.

The only thing that caught my eye was your UW GPA. Everything else looks absolutely perfect. I hope you get into Caltech/MIT!

Your GPA is definitely going to hurt your chances...

Caltech Slight reach/weaaak match
MIT Slight reach
UCLA Safety
Cal (Berkeley) Safe match (match if you applied CoE)
UC San Diego (for Biomedical Engineering) Safety
UC Irvine Super safety
University of Southern California Safety

Why so many safeties?

Stanford Reach
Duke - Match
Johns Hopkins University - Match
Cornell - Match
Columbia - weak match
Dartmouth - weak match

wow, that's heartening - let's hope it translates into a tangible envelope tomorrow, and a tangible tube next week :)

I really thought my GPA would hurt me a lot more, that's why I never allowed myself to consider Cal, UCLA, and SD "safe" matches...

bump please? I'm seriously stressing out ~

bumpppp please?

You already applied, so what can you do about it now?

Just relax, everything is fine except maybe for your GPA.

lol, your school being #3, #4 in CA is quite impressive and can probably be good. but 10% in your class is low so it might hurt you :( But your test scores are great and your ECs are decent, not PHENOMENAL but good enough. and if your recs are as good as you say, then you've got nothing to worry about! Being indian isn't gonna help cuz you're an ORM, so you might not be accepted EA to, say, MIT, but Caltech doesn't seem to have AA as much so you can probably get in there. it's EA and it's MIT, so I wouldn't expect too much, not just you but everyone else, but if you have to apply RD you can get in to 3/4 of your list, maybe more.

now you say that ur caltech envelope will arrive today, and it's been 3 hours since you last posted. does that mean you got it?

I was posting from school - I'm going home in an hour and a half... Hopefully I'll see an envelope there :)

Hey, mind chancing me in light of my recent decision? Reject from Caltech

Anyone, pretty please with a cherry on top? aka bump

PLEASE?!?!? I'm dying here...

Surely you can wait.

Go inhale some chloroform or knock yourself out with a brick. Your future will be decided in a few hours, so try not to worry.

haha, I wanted an updated chances post - with new info:

I just got flat rejected from Caltech today...so? Anything?

this will make you feel better:
I'm a C+/B- senior at a public school in Riverdale, New York. My ranking is top half of graduating class and the only extra curriculum activity in which i was involved was Community Service, which lasted for only a summer. I've also had working experience, meaning I had a job and was paid to do my job, but I worked for no more than six months. The schools to which I'm applying are pretty much cheap and ****ty... with a few exceptions. They're mostly public schools (CUNYs and SUNYs, as they are called here in New York). You have no idea of how proud of myself I would be if my life as a high school student was nearly as bright as yours. Consider yourself fortunate... so yeah, you were rejected by a school, but at least your future looks bright and promising compared to mine. Good luck, buddy. Everyone needs it.

I am truly impressed by your EC's, and I home that you get in.

honesttly i think that people giving advice on this forum actually have no idea what they're talking about, myself included. so instead of listening to advice from teenagers who really don't have a clue, go do something fun.

what is this "fun" you speak of? Hehe I have faith in you guys - I think I'm gonna get at least deferred...

How are my chances for MIT and Dartmouth (my top 2 choices)?
