Alternate Classes

Students who are already at Penn- how common is it for people to not get all their first choices when signing up for classes? I'm concerned that I may not get my first choice physics class, and phys 150 + lab is 7 hours of scheduling that really could potentially conflict with any of my other classes. Right now I've only registered my primary choices, and I will eventually register for alternates, but I'm curious as to how I should do this- should I choose any alternate, or try to plan a class that would also fit in my schedule? Physics is required for my major... and just in general my entire first semester schedule is busy enough that I don't see it being highly likely that any other classes would be able to fit without having to change writing seminars, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You won’t get everything you want during advance registration. However, everything opens up during the first week of classes, if not before [when Freshman get back their advanced registration stuff]. The tricks were probably highlighted in whatever they sent you, but put the small stuff you need first [ie. the physics lecture can be a last request as it is large, but the recitation/lab should be near the top as you need it and they are small].

I would not worry.

For physics, it shouldn’t that hard getting into a particular lecture since the sizes are pretty big. For the lab, however, it can be quite hard depending on what time it is so I’d put the lab priority up there.

Also bear in mind that for alot of classes with a big limit like the intro sciences, the professors can be flexible. Thus, even if the class is full, you could contact the professor and they may still let you in to their section as long as there is still actual seating available in the lecture hall.
