For the UCs, if you dont get accepted into your first major is there a chance to be accepted by the alternate major? How often does this happen? and has this happened to anyone?

This is probably a little more information than you need, but here goes.

Berkeley

Freshman Admission - Majors within each college are equally competitive, except engineering (admit rates vary between majors). Admit rates can vary widely between colleges and Berkeley has stopped publishing the admit rates by college. If I remember correctly, the last set of data showed L&S and Environmental Design to be the most competitive colleges on campus (excluding engineering). Natural Resources was the least competitive. The data I’m referencing is at least 3 years old, so the information may be outdated. The campus uses holistic review and is general achievement oriented.

Transfer Admission - Major/division admit rates are published online at http://students.berkeley.edu/files/Admissions/12626_5.Info_TransAdm.pdf (page 5). For GPA and major prerequisite information, see UC Transfer Q&A (it’s a long document, but it’s got everything in it). The campus uses holistic review and is general achievement oriented; personal statement plays a large role in the application evaluation process.

Davis

Freshman Admission - Admit rates may vary between colleges and divisions within a college. College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and College of Biological Sciences are the most competitive colleges on campus and all majors within each of those colleges are equally competitive. Admit rates for L&S vary by division. Engineering admits by department. Alternate major is considered; you should pick something that is in a different division or college than your first choice major. The campus uses a composite evaluation process that is 80% point system and 20% “holistic.”

Transfer Admission - All transfer applicants who meet the minimum requirement established for a given application cycle will be admitted regardless of major (although not necessarily in your first choice major). Some majors will screen for completion of major prerequisites, see UC Transfer Q&A for more information (page 18, under “Which majors screen for major preparation in the selection process?”). Alternate major is considered; make sure you pick something that does not screen for major prerequisites. The campus offers Transfer Admission Guarantee. The admission process is focused on academic preparation and grades; personal statement plays a very small role in the application evaluation process.

Irvine

Freshman Admission - Admit rates vary between schools/majors and are published online at http://www.oir.uci.edu/adm/IA19-fall-fr-select-yield-by-major-2000-2008.pdf. Alternate major is considered; you should pick something that is in a different school than your first choice major. Irvine is switching to holistic review this year so expect some changes in how students are evaluated.

Transfer Admission - Admit rates vary between schools/majors and are published online at http://www.oir.uci.edu/adm/IA21-fall-advst-select-yield-by-major-2000-2008.pdf. Most majors will screen for completion of major prerequisites, see UC Transfer Q&A for more information (page 18, under “Which majors screen for major preparation in the selection process?”). Alternate major is considered; however, you must also have the major prerequisites completed (or pick something in humanities, which does not screen for major prerequisites). The campus offers Transfer Admission Guarantee. Irvine is switching to holistic review this year so the personal statement will likely play a larger role in the application evaluation process.

UCLA

Freshman Admission - All majors in L&S are equally competitive. Admit rates for engineering are published online at http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/OASA/jassiel/2009%20UCEE%20Report.xls%20final%20for%20web%2012182009.pdf. All other colleges have supplemental applications. Alternate major is rarely considered and only for engineering (first choice and alternate must both be in engineering). The campus uses holistic review and is academic achievement oriented.

Transfer Admission - Transfer applicants are admitted by major and major prerequisites are screened for EVERY major. Admit rates are published online at [Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2010 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof10_mjr.htm). Alternate major is only considered for TAP certified applicants; you must also have the major prerequisites completed for the alternate. The campus uses holistic review and is academic achievement oriented.

Freshman Admission - All freshman applicants who meet the cut-off established for a given application cycle will be admitted to the campus regardless of major (although not necessarily in your first choice major). You are required to select an alternate major if your first choice major is designated as “impacted.” The campus uses a point system.

Impacted majors will screen for completion of major prerequisites. You should select a alternate major if your first choice major is designated as “impacted” (make sure you choose a non-impacted major as the alternate). The campus offers Transfer Admission Guarantee. The admission process is focused on academic preparation and grades; personal statement plays a very small role in the application evaluation process.

Santa Barbara

Freshman Admission - Major is not considered for admission evaluation except for engineering and computer science. College of Creative Studies requires a supplemental application; applicants not accepted into College of Creative Studies will be returned to L&S for consideration. Alternate major is considered; you should pick something that is in a different college than your first choice major. The campus uses a composite evaluation process that is part point system and part “holistic.”
