I've already submitted the supplements to a couple of my schools (they were short, informational, mostly file-opening types). Then I finally submitted my common app to one school today, with the intention of creating alternates. Do I have to use this version for every school to which I have already sent their supplement? The common app site seemed to say that you couldn't move a school from one version to another once the supplement was submitted, but I tried to do it for BC (for which I've submitted supplement but not common app), and it seemed like it worked. Although the symbol next to the supplement on the alternate version was yellow (still said downloaded though) whereas it had been green on the original version.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something since, unless I misunderstood, the site seemed to say you couldn't do it. Thanks.

You should be just fine. Your supplement will transfer to the new version regardless of submission status. The only rub is that the complete/incomplete icon will not properly update.

Thank you so much.

Is there any drawback to creating alternate versions? I was planning to make several (3-4) so as to better complement common app essays with supplemental essays… but when I tried to replicate a second time, a dialog box came up with stuff to affirm. (Such as that it’s not being done just to “customize”.) Anyone else seen this/know what to do about this? Can it just kind of be ignored or what? I don’t want to do anything wrong, but there were a few things I really wanted to be different for different schools.

The dialog box about alternate versions is meant to serve as a reminder that you may not need to ‘customize’ your application for each college to which you are applying. One of the goals of the Common Application is to make your life easier - yes, it’s true! - by allowing you to complete one application that can be submitted to multiple institutions. If there is an error in your application or big changes since your submitted an early application, then the version functionality can help you out. That dialog box is there to help remind you to not go crazy with the versions. That’s all.

Again, thank you! That’s a relief to hear.
