Alternative admission to the Honors College

Has anyone gone through this process yet? Son submitted his App today and it says it’ll take about two weeks. I have to say, I am very impressed with the efficiency and good communication at Mizzou. He applied to another big state school, back East, and we’ve heard nothing for weeks and when he emailed to check on things, they said they would respond in three days and it’s been eight now with no response. I’ve emailed Mizzou several times and received a response back the same day each time.

I am crossing my fingers he gets in to the Honors College. He missed the test score requirement by 40 points. I would love to hear of anyone’s experience w/the alternate app process. He has an unweighted/core GPA of 4.0, but his school doesn’t rank. I think his essays were very good, so I hope they let him in.

I went through the process last year. I filled out the application and got in. Mizzou is pretty good with communicating, but when I applied to the honors college, it did take a lot longer than 2 weeks. I waited about a month, hadn’t heard anything, and called them and they said they’d look at my application ASAP and got back to me with a decision a half hour later. I think I was the exception, however; I got the feeling my application might have gotten a little lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back with 3 or 4 weeks, have your son call and ask (you might not experience this problem at all, though).

He should get in; I talked to an honors staff member about the alternate app process before and they said it’s pretty easy to get in, I think in part because their standards aren’t extremely high and not that many people apply via the alternate app process so they don’t reject many. It seems like if they know the applicant is a pretty good student who’s eager to learn, they’ll get in.

For reference, I had a 29 ACT, 3.8 W GPA, and my high school didn’t rank.

@CE527M thanks for the encouraging response. Got an email today that he’s in. Maybe he will see you there next year!
