Alternative/Indie Music Thread

Hey HSL,

I saw this thread: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1268606-turn-up-alternative-indie-music-cc.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1268606-turn-up-alternative-indie-music-cc.html</a></p>

And I decided to revive the topic. Keep in mind that, although you should be a fan of indie music to participate, you don't have to just like indie music.

So music fans, what are your favorite artists? A few of mine are: Animal Collective, Radiohead, Boards of Canada, Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, Beach House, and James Blake.

Also, what are your favorite 2013 releases? Here's my (tentative) top 10 list:

1) Darkside - Psychic
2) Disclosure - Settle
3) Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
4) Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
5) Forest Swords - Engravings
6) Kanye West - Yeezus
7) Rhye - Woman
8) Jon Hopkins - Immunity
9) Arcade Fire - Reflektor
10) Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap

Honorable mentions (although the list above is not final): Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, Mutual Benefit - Love's Crushing Diamond, Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven, Tim Hecker - Virgins, and Danny Brown - Old.

ah ah ah
okay

favorite artists? Hooray for Earth, STRFKR, Wise Blood, Ultravox, Jesus and Mary Chain, Pet Shop Boys, Voxtrot…I could go on…

2013 releases:
okay Random Access Memories was rull good I have to admit
I agree with Foxygen’s
Recently I’ve really been into Autre Ne Veut’s Anxiety

yeah so much for a formal list
suffering organizational skills

also I forgot about:
Beacon- The Ways We Separate
Javelin- Hi Beams (I thought it was good, shut up pitchfork)

Nice! I haven’t heard of some of those, but I love Hooray For Earth and STRFKR.

RAM was very good, I agree (should have included it in my honorable mentions). I’ve been meaning to get into Autre Ne Veut, actually. I’ll check Anxiety out soon.

Bump. There have to be at least a few indie music fans on HSL.

I love Dirty Projectors, Dr. Dog, St. Vincent (especially her album with David Byrne), Pavement, Wilco, School of Seven Bells, Cage the Elephant, The Hold Steady, The National, Talking Heads, and Thao and The Get Down Stay Down. I also listen to Beck, Air, and The New Pornographers.

As for 2013 albums, I absolutely love Kurt Vile’s Wakin on a Pretty Daze, Dr. Dog’s B-Room, and Cage The Elephant’s Melophobia. I’m really enjoying Haim’s Days Are Gone as well.

Forgot to add, The National’s Trouble Will Find Me is one of the top albums of 2013 also.

ahh cage the elephant…havent listened through the entirety of the album but what ive heard has been awesome

Just saw Animal Collective live (for the second time this year). It was glorious. The energy was truly unprecedented.

My favorite artists are The Head and the Heart, Andrew Bird, Belle & Sebastian, Caro Emerald (she’s a pop artist, but cool nonetheless), Feist, Landon Pigg, M. Ward, Modest Mouse, Priscilla Ahn, Rachael Yamagata, Ray LaMontagne, Spoon, The 88, and The Shins.

My favorite 2013 releases are the Frozen soundtrack and Kelly Clarkson’s new Christmas album, lol.

Y’all should check out Deerhunter, now. Better than Animal Collective imo. They have a new album out, which is decent, but definitely listen to their magnum opus: Halcyon Digest:
[Deerhunter - Memory Boy (with lyrics) - YouTube](<a href=“Deerhunter - Memory Boy (with lyrics) - YouTube”>Deerhunter - Memory Boy (with lyrics) - YouTube)

Youth Lagoon is nice too: [Youth Lagoon - Posters - Music Video - YouTube](<a href=“Youth Lagoon - Posters - Music Video (Unnofficial) - YouTube”>Youth Lagoon - Posters - Music Video (Unnofficial) - YouTube)
Wild Nothing: [Wild Nothing - Bored Games - YouTube](<a href=“Wild Nothing - Bored Games - YouTube”>Wild Nothing - Bored Games - YouTube)
Yuck: [Yuck - Georgia - YouTube](<a href=“Yuck - Georgia - YouTube”>Yuck - Georgia - YouTube)

Voxtrot is neat, but I prefer their older materials. I prefer JAMC’s Darklands to their more renowned Psychocandy, but I remember being obsessed with “Just Like Honey” after watching Lost In Translation several years back. Forest Swords/Jon Hopkins are definitely in my top 10 this year. BoC was alright, kinda disappointing. Cage The Elephant was mediocre, but fun.

If any of you are into older indies, this band largely defines the indie side of my music tastes (listen with headphones + full volume!): [My Bloody Valentine - To Here Knows When (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) - YouTube](<a href=“My Bloody Valentine - To Here Knows When (Official Music Video) - YouTube”>My Bloody Valentine - To Here Knows When (Official Music Video) - YouTube)

@OP: do you like Burial?

@Studious: do you have a last.fm?

Right now my indie music knowledge is oddly limited to korean artists. I’ll post some later but I’m looking forward to going through the rest of this thread.

Edit: Stud, are allowed to post alternative hip hop/rap?

^I’ve been wanting to look into the Korean indie scene for a while. Do you know Donawhale?

No I don’t actually but I love to check them/her/him out tommorrow when I’m not so sleepy.

Otherwise, I can recomend a few right now. On second thought, just one because I’m tired: Glen Check.

They are pretty good, even though I tend to like the mellower stuff in general.

Wow, some good taste in this thread!

Two of my favorite albums this year that haven’t been mentioned are King Krule’s 6 Feet Beneath the Moon and Typhoon’s White Lighter.

Some older alternative/indie artists that I like that haven’t been mentioned include Pinback (Summer in Abaddon), The Microphones (The Glow Pt 2), Spiritualized (Ladies & Gentlemen), Margot & the Nukes (Dust of Retreat), Ives the Band (Mr. Birch), and Wolf Parade (Apologies). Also a fan of Slow Club and Tame Impala.

^Do you like Mount Eerie? It’s The Microphones’ other stuff.

@Muta: Glen Check definitely doesn’t sound like the korean mainstream **** O.O Reminds me of artists like YOU LOVE HER COZ SHE’S DEAD and a bit of Crystal Castles.

last.fm is schweeet. i bought into the whole subscription thing too cause that radio is soo nice to have on my phone.

@MBVloveless I’ve been trying to get into liking mbv (and slowdive) for the longest time. where should I start?

also wild nothing and youth lagoon 0.0 thumbs up

Ps currently jammin out to a Cocteau twins Christmas track. Frosty the snowman heck yeah

^ which album is that from? I have on my computer from Garlands to Four-Calendar Cafe but can’t seem to find the track.

Slowdive: Souvlaki is obviously their magnum opus…try 40 Days, Machine Gun, When The Sun Hits, and of course Souvlaki Space Station. If you’re into more spacey/ambient stuff, try Pygmalion e.g. Blue Skied An’ Clear.

MBV: Loveless duh.
