alternative schools for deferrees

this is somewhat off topic for this thread, but because i was deferred from pton, do you think this is a reflection of how i will do at my other schools? its not like dartmouth, duke, northwestern and cornell are easy to get into. does anyone think i even have a shot, especially at dartmouth, if pton, a school with a similar admit rate, deferred??

It's really hard to say without seeing your stats (even with your stats it's hard to tell), but the fact that you weren't outright rejected says that you're certainly a decent candidate. That means that they're willing to take another look at your application in the spring.

Not necessarily. I know of people who've been deferred from and rejected at Princeton after applying ED who've gotten into other great schools like Yale, Harvard, Stanford, etc.

As for Calculus...as someone at Princeton right now, I almost hope he does manage to wiggle out and go to Harvard. I'm not sure he'd add much to the community here. I'm sure someone with more integrity can take his spot.

I don't think it is a reflection necessarily of how you'll do in other schools. Most of the kids I've seen here are very qualified and I'm sure will end up in very good schools. However, you also have to look at it from a probabilistic point of view. HPYSM are extremely competitive, and after half the class gets filled in through ED/EA, RD becomes even more competitive (single digit acceptance rate). So from a practical point of view, it makes sense to have some other options in there as well (still great schools but not HPYSM or just ivies).

It seems that pretty much EVERYBODY is applying to Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, or some combination of the 3.

I wonder if the same is true for people deferred from those schools. Nearly EVERYBODY I know who is applying to one Ivy is also applying to Princeton...and that's dumb becuase half of them don't even want to go there!

Whoever was talking about the Texas top 10% rules? They are sooo dumb. OMZ you and I are NOT!!! going to end up living in Jester together. OK, deal? Deal.

YES... Good stuff princeton24601!!

Please, I need to hear from Calculus on this topic!

haha I haven't even submitted my housing app and they were released in September, I think.

So I'm pretty sure I'll be stuck in one of those closet-basement "dorm rooms" in Jester ::sigh::

princeton24601- If you look at the ED thread from last year and do a bit of digging, you'll find that a lot of the people who were deferred ended up at great schools (Dartmouth, Brown, Johns Hopkins, etc). And, if my memory serves me right, a couple of years ago some of the applicants that were deferred from Princeton ended up going to Harvard and Yale. There is hope!

Kraor and omz: I got into Oxford!!!! Offer to study Biochem at Somerville if I get a 4 or better on my AP chem exam. How amazing is that???

I love it just as much as Princeton; the only thing that made P-ton my first choice was its amazing finaid. Ot Oxford, internationals get 0, so it will be Ivy-League expensive if I chose to go there. But I still really really want to!!!
Yay! This made my Christmas!

Hey congratulations !

Oxford is an amazing school with an amazing reputation. Good luck with your AP and if I may say this: It's worth the money.

Congrats, nelle! That's sooo amazing!!! :)

congrats nelle! oxford is the only school on earth that I would place above Pton. Sadly, they do not give out finaid to intls.

Congrats! That would sure make my Christmas too!

nelle - I am not surprised. I bet if you did RD to Princeton you'd be accepted too. If you decide to give it another shot, please let me know and I'd be happy to read any supplemental essay. Congrats.

Nelle that is awesome!!!
I am seriously sooo happy for you!
Congratulations!
::squeals::

=)

WOWWW congratulations nelle!!! that is AMAZING!!! Oxford is beautiful and a great school!! (obviously) it's funny because there are pictures on the wall of my english class of Oxford and just today i was staring at them... it's so gorgeous.

AAAHH, thanks guys!!! I am simply extatic.
I guess I don't suck at life after all. =) Oxford is a really great match for me, because they focus on teaching you only your subject as opposed to all of the liberal arts. And I am relatively sure about biochem, so it will be great to become a total expert at it if I go there.
Of course I am still hoping to get in RD, Alumother; I love the schools equally, except at Princeton I would not get buried in student loans. But now I know that I still might have a shot!

Nelle, dont sweat it. Either way, you have great options ahead of you. Even if Princeton doesnt work out, I cant imagine you getting upset...after all, there is Oxford! ;)

You're in a great position now, you should be very ecstatic. ;) :D

@nelle: If I were you, I'd turn the offer down, unless you can afford it. There was a Princeton study that showed that success is based on the schools you get into, and not the school you go to; people who turned down Harvard did just as well (on average) as those who matriculated. Of course, if you really love Oxford and want to spend four years in the UK, go for it. But remember, that whether you take the offer or turn it down, you will do well in life.

Oh, and don't worry about getting a 4 on the chem test. 4's are easy, and you'll probably get a 5!

nelle, I applied to Oxford as well- Law more specifically. Which college were you under the consideration of? I'm an applicant in St. Hilda's.
I'm so nervous! They only take approximately 6-8 Law applicants a year :/ My dad has e-mailed the college to ask when they're/or if they've mailed the letters out, but I'm so happy for you! CONGRATS (hopefully I'll be seeing you at either Oxford or Princeton!) and don't even worry about that 4 in AP Chemistry!

And my other choices in colleges:
1. Princeton (deferred)
2. Yale
3. Oxford
4. Stanford
5. Wharton
6. Columbia
7. Dartmouth
8. Duke

...I'm applying to 13 other schools but those are definitely my top choices.
